How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new goals for now and I am grateful for accomplishing the one I had in mind. The fact that managed to construct a decent house has restored my dignity and joy in life. The previous one had a leaky roof and was small in size it couldn't accommodate all my family members.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well by giving us sufficient teachings on how to protect our cash transfers. By so doing there were zero cases of theft and robbery which was a win for the organization. I, therefore, do not see any sector that GiveDirectly needs a change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on settling a debt of KES 13000 to a friend. Earlier on, he had constructed my house but I couldn't afford to pay all the required charges. I now have peace of mind knowing that I will no longer be frustrated. Also, I bought new school uniforms, stationery, and cleared fees arrears of KES 6000 for my four children who are in primary schools. Initially, they used to be on and off because of the accumulated fee balance. Lastly, I bought decent clothes and foodstuffs for my kids that took us three weeks.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still recall just like the other day at exactly 11 AM when I was fetching firewood in the neighboring village when my mobile phone started ringing continuously. I was so nervous but since I couldn't read the message I had to go back home and seek assistance from my helper. After checking she realize that it was the Mpesa message from Segovia Technology. I was super excited and I remember having to call all my family members and inform them about the good news. We later started planning appropriately on how we would use the cash.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I have been married for over twenty years and life has never been smooth even a single day. My biggest problem was shelter, I have always been dreaming of at least owning a decent house that would accommodate all my family members but this was not possible at all. Therefore this forced all my five children to seek shelter from different compounds far away from the village which according to me I felt that they were not safe and they might get harmed. It has always been stressing me and to make the matter worse, whenever it could rain, they were not able to seek shelter becasue of the harsh weather. Therefore we had to squeeze ourselves n the single room till dawn. This was very frustrating and embarrassing because all my children were teenagers and it wasn't right for me to share a room with them. However, we had no option because I have been depending on casual jobs with very low income (KES 100) per day which was not enough to cater to all the needs. I am now happy because I have been able to build a decent house that can accommodate all my family members which has been my desire.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying building poles which cost KES 10000, iron sheets, timber, threads and nails, and labor costs. I had intended to construct a new house becasue the previous one had a leaky roof and was very small and it would collapse anytime from now. I also cleared school fees of KES 3000 for my three kids who are schooling in the neighboring village. In addition, I bought new clothes and shoes for my children because the previous ones were just but rugs which used demoralize them. With the remaining amount of money, I am using it to buy enough foodstuffs like; cereals, vegetables, and maize flour that could sustain us for a couple of pf days.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a decent house for my family. This is because I am planning to use my entire first transfer to construct a two-bedroom house, that will allow me to live a decent life. Currently, I am living in a small house which is leaking during rainy seasons. This house ashames me a lot especially when I have visitors because there is no place where my visitors can rest. With the second transfer, it will help me to pay for school fees for my children in school and also cater to family needs like food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day waking up healthy with my children despite the health challenges gives me hope and joy for a better future.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship that I have even faced in my life is constantly illness in my family. Due to these challenges, I have been spending every coin I get on medication, thus preventing me to cater to other basic needs of the family like constructing a decent house for the family.
