How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The money has enabled me to build a new house. My previous house was in a pathetic condition since one side had collapsed and I lacked the financial resources to buy adequate materials for its renovation. I am grateful to GiveDirectly since I can now access a better shelter. I also have some goats that I purchased which to me are assets. I am expecting them to reproduce and have many of them.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done well in changing our lives by giving us these transfers. We were able to effectively fulfil our financial goals with ease unlike before receiving this financial support. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent a bigger portion of the second transfer on buying some building materials to complete my house. I had begun the project but materials got depleted in the process. When I received this money, I purchased the remaining materials and finished the construction of the house. I also hired the services of oxen to plough my farm since it was the planting season. I spent the remaining amount to buy some daily foodstuffs and paying for other household expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I was sheltering in a small grass-thatched hut which collapsed soon after enrollment due to its horrible state. I was forced to seek shelter from a neighbor and my items left stacked in the open. This was a stressing situation because we were insecure and my children never had a place to study at night. I thank GiveDirectly because, through their financial support, I managed to build a new decent and iron-roofed house which makes the biggest difference in my daily life. Currently, my children are studying comfortably without any interference. This has even made their academic performance improve since they are at peace now.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember that day very well, it was around 5 am when I heard a loud vibration from my phone, an alert of a message. I was curious to know about the contents of the message and at daybreak, I called my helper who confirmed to me that it was an Mpesa message, informing that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I felt happy for this financial assistance.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I have been sheltering in a shanty house which was almost collapsing due to its bad state. When I received the first transfer, I spent a larger portion of it to buy building materials in order to construct a new house. I bought 30 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and timber to facilitate this. Apart from this, I also spent a portion to hire laborers to work on my farm. I am old and weak and this condition makes me unfit to prepare my farm adequately. I am assured of getting plenty of harvest like the others. I also cleared fees arrears for my children for them to continue with their studies without any disturbances. I spent the remaining amount to buy enough foodstuffs for my family and some other household items.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A decent house for my family is what receiving this money means to me. Currently, I am living in a leaking, grass-thatched house which is about to collapse. The transfers I am about to receive will revive my joy because am planning, to construct a good one. Part of the transfers will aid in paying hospital bills for my husband who has been ailing from chest problem for about one year now.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The afternoon is the happiest part of my day because it is at this time when I am back home from my casual work. I get time to rest and probably have my first meal. Unlike in the morning hours when I am in the bush collection firewood for sale.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Imagine sleeping under a leaking and nearly open-roofed house!! It has been a very hard moment for me since this condition has affected my husband health-wise. With the financial constraints I face, my desire to have a decent one has been in vain not to mention renovating the old one. This has forced my husband to relocate to Bamba town to be closer to the hospital and also to have a good shelter from my relative. Now that we are experiencing the long rains, I am spending sleepless nights due to my leaking roof. Therefore, financial instability has been my biggest hardship.
