How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because managed to construct two houses, for my children and mine. We have been sheltering in a small house which according to my culture, it was taboo. We had no option because my spouse has been jobless and we could only depend on my elder son for the daily bread. Sometimes we could even skip meals because he also relied on temporary jobs with low incomes. Therefore constructing better houses was so hard. We are now living happily as a family with no more worries like before. Also having cleared school fees for my children is a great relief to me because they were even approaching an exam and I had no single coin in my pocket. After receiving the money I managed to clear the balance plus that of next term. I am glad they will study without any disturbances.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a perfect job in my entire village I can't even afford to complain. The money was sent equally without discriminating against anyone in terms of gender, tribe, or even religion. Also, we were well informed about the online conmen so we were expected to be vigilant. This really helped most of us leading to fewer cases of theft.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 29000 of my second transfer on clearing school fees for my children who are in secondary and primary schools respectively. The arrears have been stressing me for a long belong every time my children could be sent home to collect the fees and all I could do was to make fake promises to the teachers to them to continue with their studies. I had to do this because I tried to make both ends meet but all was in vain. Also, I bought 34 pieces of iron sheets 34 at KES 700 each. These were for the completion of two houses for my children and mine. With the remaniing amount of money, I bought enough food for the family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around seven in the morning when I was heading to the market when I heard my phone ringing continuously. I was a bit shocked and decided to check who it could be. On checking, I realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I had finally my first transfer as promised. Due to the excitement that I had, I had to return back home and celebrate with the rest of my family members.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I managed to clear the huge fee balances for my children after staying home for days. This had really been stressing me I had no asset that I can sell so that I can get the fees. Some of my children were about to drop out of school since they were hopeless. The fact that I never had the chance to go to school I have really been wishing to see all my children get a good education which will lead to a bright future together with their generation. Therefore the coming of GiveDirectly in my life changed the whole story because I managed to send them back to school and they are continuing with their studies like the rest. I am now happy and hopeful because I am sure they will succeed in life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as iron sheets, timber, building poles, and nails. This was for the construction of two new houses mine and for my children. Previously we used to shelter under a very small hut which had a leaky roof whenever it could rain, we had to seek shelter from relatives. I also paid school fees for my children who are in secondary and primary schools. With the remaining amount of money I bought enough foodstuffs for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
"My longing has been to construct a semi-permanent house for my family of 7 members. For the past 10 years, I have been sharing a house with my children and my co wife. This is against our culture, but due to financial challenges, I have failed to construct one. Receiving this money means fulfilling a long time desire. I am planning to spend 90,000 shillings to construct a spacious house for my children so that they can leave a decent and comfortable life.Furthermore, I will use the remaining amount to renovate the one we are living in so that I, together with my husband can retain our respect because we will separate from sleeping with our children."
What is the happiest part of your day?
"Morning becomes my happiest part of the day. This is because the temperature are always cool and favorable for me to continue with my job of burning charcoal. Unlike in the afternoon when it us very hot."
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
"Coming from a polygamous family and the only bread winner becomes a big challenge. I rely on burning charcoal this job is tiresome and earns me 400 shillings in a day. This amount is not enough to cater for all our basic needs e.g food. Lack of a good source of income becomes my biggest hardship."
