Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home alone one morning when I received a message notification on my phone. When I checked it, I saw that GiveDirectly had sent me $200. I felt an overwhelming sense of happiness and gratitude. My first thought was to improve the appearance of my house by buying the necessary furniture. This money would allow me to create a more comfortable and welcoming environment for my family. I couldn’t wait to start making these improvements and enjoy the benefits of a better living space.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life since receiving the transfer from GiveDirectly is that I now have a sense of comfort and stability in my home. I used to feel overwhelmed by financial stress, especially when it came to paying school fees for my children. With the funds I received, I was able to create a cozy living space for my family and ensure that their education remains uninterrupted. I no longer have to rely on casual labor, which used to take a toll on my time and energy. Instead, I can focus on providing for my family’s needs while also feeling secure about their future. This support has truly changed my life, giving me hope and peace of mind.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving $200 from GiveDirectly, my immediate thought was to improve the appearance of my house, which lacked furniture. I decided to use $120 to buy two comfortable sofas. This not only enhanced the outlook of my home but also provided a cozy space for my family to relax together. After that, I used $50 to pay school fees for one of my children in form three, as well as some pocket money for another child attending Egerton University. This ensured that their education remained uninterrupted and they could focus on their studies without financial stress. Previously, I relied on casual labor to cover school fees, so this was a significant burden lifted from my shoulders. Finally, I used $30 to buy complementary foods. Since I had just harvested maize, I purchased rice and beans to ensure that my family had enough food and a variety of meals. This support from GiveDirectly has transformed our living situation and provided us with much-needed comfort and security.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My main house is nearing completion, but most of my income is consumed by food and school fees. The transfers from GiveDirectly gives me hope of living in a better house. I plan to allocate $200 of the funds for renovating my kitchen and completing the construction of my main house. I will also use $150 to pay school fees for my two daughters as this will give them humble time to work on their studies. It has always been my dream to invest in livestock farming but financial challenges made me not realize my dream. With the transfers from GiveDirectly, I will buy 5 goats. This will cost $180 of the transfers.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In April, our village was struck by the devastating flash floods, the incident was tragic and horrifying. Most families lost their belongings and crops. I am grateful that my household was spared.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of stable family income is making our lives increasingly difficult and unbearable. It is unfortunate that my old age limits my ability to take on casual work to provide for my family of four. I am currently working as a caregiver to support myself. However, with a monthly income of $45, I am struggling to cover the school fees for my two daughters, who are enrolled in college and secondary school. I am currently working as a caregiver to support myself. However, with a monthly income of $45, I am struggling to cover the school fees for my two daughters, who are enrolled in college and secondary school. I feel deeply distressed when my daughter is sent home to collect the unpaid school fees. It pains me to see her fall behind in her education, and I feel as though I am failing her as a parent.
