How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With the piped water conveyed to our doorsteps, it has been my prayer that I can get a sizeable water tank to help in the storage of water. Dry seasons have been giving us great challenges and only those who invested earlier in storage facilities had been lucky. I am also glad that I finally bought one for our household and this would not have been possible if I had never received the transfer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirecrly did extremely well by choosing to provide financial support to all households in our village. This is one decision I had never seen in any other organization. Getting an opportunity to choose what to spend the money on gave us that liberty to ensure that we rectify every point which seemed to have been falling apart in our household. Since I received the transfer, I am grateful and no complaint at all. I am always praying that GiveDirectly may reach out to other people who are also in need the same way they did to us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the 22000KES from the second transfer, I bought a 3000-liter plastic water tank. This was one of the items I had on the to-do list after getting piped water channeled to our household. I needed a storage facility as a backup plan in case of droughts and any uncertainties with the water supply which we normally face. I also parted with 8000KES after obtaining four rolls of barbed wire and paying the labor after putting up a strong fence around my compound. With the remaining amount, I completed the construction of our new house. I am glad we managed to complete the floors, and currently, we are finishing up on the painting.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning when we had just woken up when I received the message indicating that I had received the lump sum amount from GiveDirectly. I could not hide my joy and I informed my family about it. They got excited and we rejoiced to the point that we even forgot that we were having breakfast. There was a ray of hope in us because we now knew that we were going to fulfill our dreams.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
This transfer is going to bring a very big difference in our lives. When the cow reproduces, we will be able to get milk that my family can consume and we call sell part of it. The money from the sales will enable us to pay for the children’s school fees and even buy food. My family and I have been living in a small house for a very long time, with this new house that we are building, we will be able to get more room that will even be enough for guests visiting. We were also able to buy food that will sustain us for quite some time and thus we will not be having any worries about what we are going to eat. With the chairs that we bought, we will now be able to sit comfortably and chat together for long hours.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The money from GiveDirectly has helped us in a lot of ways. We bought a cow with part of the transfer and we are building another house. I also bought some chairs for the house and clothes for my children to wear. I have also been able to buy some food that will sustain my family for quite some time. The reason why we decided to settle on buying the above things and building a new house, is because those are things that we have always wanted and needed the most. We were not in a position to acquire them because we did not have the money to do so, most of the money that we have been getting has been going to payment of school fees for our children. We believe that there is going to be a lot of changes in our lives and this is all thanks to GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means financial independence to me. I intend to initiate a Poultry keeping project that will enable me to support my spouse in sustainably supporting our family needs. I will therefore have to build a modern poultry unit at a cost of approximately $100, then buy 60 chicks costing $100. I will also spend $300 to buy barbed wire, wire mesh and timber for fencing my compound in order to restrict the chicken from damaging crops in my neighbor's farms. I will also buy a $300 dairy cow whose constant production of milk for sale will supplement my income from selling poultry products.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After my spouse exits home every morning, I usually spend the whole day doing household chores. My day is always full of worries, about whether he will be able to secure work to do to earn some income at the end of the day. Whenever he manages to come back home having earned some money to buy food, evening becomes the happiest part of my day
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My spouse who is our family breadwinner earns $1.5 from his masonry job. His earnings are dependent on the availability of jobs since it is never a guarantee to secure such jobs due to the remoteness of this area. Supporting a family of six with such low income is so depressing to us, which is the biggest hardship we face.
