How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
So far, I am happy with what I have accomplished, though I would like to buy more cows. This would provide food security while also earning me at least an additional income. To realize this dream, my wife and I would focus on effectively managing what we have, which would multiply. We are extremely grateful for the financial support.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The freedom to spend our money on whatever we wanted piqued my interest during the enrollment process. Furthermore, the security information helped us avoid being defrauded. They thoroughly explained the program to us during our compound meeting and explained how it works. Because the enrollment process was smooth, I didn't notice any flaws that needed to be addressed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I saw the need for a dairy cow after receiving my second transfer. This is because I wanted to reduce the cost of buying milk daily, which was very expensive. After all, one liter costs $0.5. As a result, I spend $380 on a cow, which was previously not possible due to the need for school fees and my reliance on my cobbler job, which is not very reliable. My wife runs a household goods business. We have six kids. I then spend $120 on school fees for my two high school-aged children. I am overjoyed that I can now own a cow in my old age, which will reduce our daily expenses.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I remember vividly that it was around 6 Am when I heard a message notification on my phone. It was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I could not believe my eyes because I have never received such an amount of money before. when I inform my family members everyone celebrated the good news. It was one of the happiest mornings we have ever had. I knew I would be able to invest well and fulfill my dreams. GiveDirectly has improved our standard of living.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Paying the school fees for my son who is in secondary school is the biggest difference in my daily life. This was my main focus since I had always wished my son to study well without being disturbed. I do casual jobs in the village and the amount of money that I would get was so small. I was not able to pay all the fees at once and this sometimes made my son be sent home. In long run, it was affecting his performance. Due to so many recent household basic needs, I was not able to save any money. I was so stressed whenever my son was at home. When I received the money from GiveDirectly I felt so happy and I was able to pay all the school fees on time. My son had a good time studying without being disturbed like before. His performance improved compared to the previous academic year. I am so grateful because this gave me peace of mind and hope to do my best. GiveDirectly improved our living standards and enabled us to achieve our dreams.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spend KES 35,000 on purchasing a heifer and an ox. I had always wished on starting a livestock rearing project and I have fulfilled this and I feel so good. I paid KES 9,000 for school fees for my son who was in secondary school. He was able to study well and this led to better performance after form four. For the rest of the money, I purchased food and clothes for my family members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means clean water for home consumption. Currently I live in a grass thatched house that cannot enable me to harvest rain water for drinking as what we fetch from the river is not safe and sometimes we get diseases such as typhoid. I will use KES 25,000 for purchasing building materials and cost of labour in order to build two-roomed iron sheet house. After which I can buy 3,000 litre water storage tank to harvest water for future use.I will not feel embrassed again borrowing water the from community. For the rest of the transfer, I will buy a dairy cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Although the last six months have been hard, having good health and being able to pay part of my son's fees in the final year of secondary school is what brought me joy. However, I still have KES 3,000 balance which cannot prevent him from sitting for his national examination.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The challenge we are facing currently is financial constraints. I have one child in final year at secondary level and raising his school fees has been a challenge because per year I have to pay KES 12,000 with the KES 150 I earn daily from my small bussiness.
