How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had this goal already while waiting for this transfer and it was my main aim which was buying ten goats. This was because I saw the benefits of having these goats especially when they reproduce and increase in numbers, as most of the ones I bought are almost about to reproduce. I will be able to sell one or two and address the financial challenges I will be facing in the future. I couldn't afford to have these goats before as I solely depended on my charcoal burning and selling business whose little income mainly used to meet my family's immediate needs as well as pay my children's school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
One of the things that GiveDirectly did well was the unconditional cash transfer which helped us address our various challenges, some of which were very personal as each person was having their own in as much as poverty level was just the same to all of us in the village. That is something I am very grateful to GiveDirectly for, and especially the peace of mind that it comes with knowing that it is an amount which one won't have to pay back. We are all so grateful for our living standards were raised to levels that we couldn't just get to before the coming of GiveDirectly to our village. Everything was done so well, the services we received from the Field Officers were excellent and very compassionate. I see nothing that was not done well, it was so good.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer which was KES 45000 on buying ten goats because I saw great benefits in having goats especially when they reproduce and increase in numbers, and given that most of the ones I bought are on the verge of reproducing already. This was my main aim as I know that when they continue reproducing, I'll be able to sell one or two and address the financial challenges I will be facing in the future when I am stranded. These goats will also help me meet some of my family's immediate needs, especially food from the milk that will be available after the goats reproduce, which will be food for my children. I also be able to offer the surplus milk to our neighbors at a fee, which will go a long way in helping me with my family's needs. Getting these goats was just an impossible dream because my charcoal burning and selling business hardly raised enough and whatever amount of money I could raise was shared between the immediate needs and my children's school fees. Therefore, I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for making this impossible dream come true.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy when I received the money because I had been one of the ones those who had benefitted from the financial assistance brought to our village by GiveDirectly. I was so grateful the moment I received the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I no longer have to go out to the forest and cut down trees to burn charcoal, as I have goats that I am looking after. We also get regular meals and no longer have to get food and other basic commodities on credit and accumulating debts like we used to do in the very recent past. I am so grateful and proud that I now have a peace of mind and I do not carry out the tedious and tiresome work of cutting trees to burn charcoal and sell.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer which was KES 28000 on buying seven goats because that to me would be a sign of progress and development in my life because I had never possessed goats or livestock before and would place me on the same level with everyone else who has goats or has been having livestock. These goats would also in turn improve my life and that of my children because from them we will be getting regular and healthy tea for breakfast every morning. I am so proud and happy, all thanks to GiveDirectly. I also spent KES 5000 on settling my children's school fees arrears because they had constantly in and out of school due to arrears which was disrupting their education. I believe in education and it is a priority for my children because I know that with a good education they will find employment and inturn I'll be able to count on them in the future to help me address the financial challenges I will be facing.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means self employment and income generation for me. For the last two years, I have fully been working as a charcoal burner. The income I get is approximately 5,000 KES. Having a family of 7 children, this income does not satisfy our needs as a family. I intend to supplement it by opening a hotel at the village center. The hotel will cost me a total of 30,000 KES to construct and stock it up . I will be roughly making a profit of 300 KES per day. This will go a long way in helping me sort the needs of my family especially buying food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The health of my children has been the source of my joy. None of them has ever been sick for the last six months. In as much as we face life challenges ( lack of food, lack of school fees), good health gives us hope.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The current drought is the greatest challenge I am facing. I was a proud owner of 20 goats and 10 cows. I lost all my livestock due to lack of water caused by the drought. Before, I could sell some of my livestock to earn an income. Right now, I have nothing to smile about. I only depend on charcoal burning which does not fully satisfy the needs of my family. I approximately get 5,000 KES per month. With a family of 7 children, this amount is too little to sustain us. The drought has also forced me to walk for longer distances in search of water for domestic use.
