How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In April, devastating floods swept away the old mud hut where I used to reside, leaving me homeless. Since then, my one child and two grandchildren have been taking refuge in the house that my mother left behind. According to our culture, it is taboo to sleep in my mother's house, so I have been forced to seek sleeping arrangements from friends. This situation makes me feel very uncomfortable and displaced. My plan for the coming year is to build a two-roomed house made of iron sheets using the third transfer from GiveDirectly. Having my own space will relieve me of the shame of having to borrow a place to sleep at my age, allowing me to live without the constant worry of imposing on others.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has been effective in promoting equality within the community by providing assistance to everyone, regardless of their financial status. Additionally, the organization kept their word, since we received the exact amount of money they had promised on time. However, I suggest that the organization should consider conducting in-person follow-up visits to the elderly in their homes, as many of them may not feel comfortable communicating over the phone due to a lack of familiarity with technology.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My mother had been sick for more than two years, and as the only child left behind after losing my brother, it has been very challenging to manage everything. Caring for her required both emotional and financial resources, and it has been a constant source of stress and worry for me. The transfer came at a critical time when her health had worsened, and she had to be rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we lost her. The entire second transfer went towards paying off the hospital bill and covering her funeral expenses. I am deeply grateful for the financial support from GiveDirectly. Without it, I do not know how I would have managed these overwhelming expenses.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
My plan for the transfer is to renovate my house. I live in a mud house which because of the rain is falling with a lot of holes. This has made me sleep in the cold. With the transfers, I will be able to build an iron sheet house that will cost me about $300. I also plan to fence off my land. This will offer me a chance to do farming and avoid disturbance from livestock. I also plan to purchase 4 sheep which will cost me about $200 of the transfers. This will act as my investment into the future. When this plan materializes I will be very happy since my life will have changed positively thanks to GiveDirectly.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiness over the past 6 months has come from the rains we have received over the past 2 months. This delights me so much because there is plenty of food and also our farms will be productive.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I'm a fisherman and with the current rains, life has been very difficult for me. The coming of the rains has greatly affected my fishing activities since there are fewer fish. This has led to a lack of income on my side which affects me so much since sometimes I don't have food to eat. This has forced me to depend on casual work which is not also enough to meet my daily needs.
