How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am a single parent raising 4 children together with my parents. The new goal that I have is to purchase a piece of land as a future investment for the children when they grow up. This is because I am currently living at my parent's home where I lack the right to land ownership according to tradition. Owning a piece of land will be an important investment for the children as they will be able to construct houses once they mature and have somewhere they call their home.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well in conducting meetings in the community with the potential beneficiaries before the actual enrollment. Also, the officers did not discriminate against people based on their economic status and the enrollment was conducted in a fair manner. All the eligible households were enrolled in the program something that was very pleasing. I do not see anything that they did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the recent transfer to renovate my house which had collapsed on one side and was leaking during the rainy season due to the old, rusty porous iron roof. I was forced to move our bed from one location to another at night when it was raining something that troubled my mind so much and I lacked the money to repair it. I spent KES 24,000 to purchase 12 iron sheets, building poles and a labor cost of KES 7000 to construct a new shelter for the family. I also used the remaining amount of KES 30,000 to boost the grocery business that I started with the first transfer. I am selling vegetables like sukuma wiki, tomatoes, onions and fried fish. Currently, I am happy that I can earn a profit between KES 1000 to KES 1500 per day which is enough money that can comfortably support our basic needs like food as well as the educational needs of my 2 children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the morning and I was feeding my baby when I received a message and upon open it, I found out that it was the cash transfers message. Since I'm not married, I didn't share it with anyone and started budgeting for it. I was really going through a lot then and I couldn't thank God and GiveDirectly for this opportunity they had given me to change my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I'm now self employed and able to give my children a better life and I'm nolonger afraid of sleeping under my roof because my house walls were strengthened.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother of three and before receiving my first transfer, I was employed as a waitress in a local restaurant. I was earning KES 100 per day and this is all I would use to provide basic needs and pay school fees for my three children. Life was never easy because having one meal per day was the usual norm to us. My long life dream was to start a business so that I can earn a better income and give my children a better life but I couldn't raise enough capital on my own. Being enrolled in the program was the best opportunity for me to achieve my dream. I spend KES 35000 to open a local fish restaurant and the balance to strengthen my house walls which had become very weak and could fall anytime. I am happy that we got out of this danger and I'm able to give my children a better life.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My house is in pathetic condition which I feel we are are not safe living in it with my 3 children. I have been living in this house for the past 3 years. It gets worse whenever it rains because the roof leaks and I sometimes have to take my kids to sleep at their grandparents' house. Receiving this money from GiveDirectly means building one bedroom house which I believe would accommodate all of us. 30000 KES would be enough for all the building costs. I will also spend 5000 KES on paying school fees for my son who is in pre primary school. The rest of the money will be mostly spent on food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My first born who is in lower primary school is a hard working student and always strives to perform well. Last term he posted good grades which made my whole family very happy and I did appreciate him by buying him a new mathematics text book.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a single parent and bearing the responsibilities of raising the three children is not easy as I only depend on casual labour which I only get peanuts (300 KES) per day. Due to the little pay I get from this, providing my family with basic needs such as food, clothes and school fees becomes a big challenge. My children sometimes go to bed hungry.
