How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have not discussed with my husband the new goals that we would like to achieve since I am not at home at the moment. I am in college which is far away from my home studying full time. I believe that if we get to have the discussion, we will be talking about how to get money for paying school fees for our four children. We have one child who is in secondary school and the rest are still in primary school. We usually depend on the salary that my husband earns as a security guard to pay school fees for the children We also have some cows and we usually sell milk to raise more money for school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well when they honored their promise and came and enrolled everyone in their household just as they had said in the meeting that they held with the community members. I do not see anything that I recommend them to change. I would like to just encourage them to continue with the good work of helping the needy.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 20000 from the second transfer on paying for my college fees. I have trained as a teacher and the ministry of education wanted us to upgrade our studies because of the new curriculum that was introduced in the country. I hence had applied to go back to college to do the upgrading but I did not have the money for paying for my studies. Coincidentally the college acceptance letter was sent at the time when we got our first transfer. We were very happy because it enabled me to join college. The second transfer enabled me to clear the balance that I was still having. If it was not for the transfers from GiveDirectly, we could have borrowed a loan so that I could join college. Apart from the above, we also spent KES 10000 on paying for a debt that we owed someone. The remaining amount we used it in buying food for our consumption and some household necessities such as sugar, soap, cooking oil, etc. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for the support that you gave us.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
With the much planning I had been having for the past few weeks before receiving the transfer, a message confirmation on my phone brought forth an exciting moment to me. I had a small business that I needed to boost and at the same time I had received a circular from the Ministry of Education that needed all teachers - I being one of them- to enroll in a Diploma level. This transfer came right in time that my family needed such support as we could not raise enough money to cover all the financial obligations that we had back then.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life after receiving the first transfer is the joy of going back to school to further my education. This is a dream I had been having for such a long time but being a mother at the moment, I was slowly parting ways with this dream since I needed to direct all the resources we have to educate our children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With the many plans that we initially had as a family, we had to change our priorities after receiving the transfers as a matter of urgency came in just a week before receiving the transfer. I was glad that my husband gave my enrollment to the Diploma level an upper hand, and with KES46000 tuition fees, I was able to be admitted to the Teachers Training College where I will be for the next nine months. With the remaining amount, I purchased all the school requirements that included a metallic box, bedding, clothing, and also other household consumables that I will be using for the next few months. I am grateful for all we have done through the support from GiveDirectly and looking forward to the second transfer that will help us in the implementation of the projects we previously had.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a trained teacher but I have never secured a job. Since I used my husband's resources to go to college, I look forward to a time when I can support him in educating our children. To do this I must find a source of income. I started a shop small business that give me about KES 300 per day. Receiving this money means I can expand my shop business. I will stock more items at about KES 50,000. This will bring my daily income to about KEs 800 per day. I will use part of this income on household needs and partly to support, my husband, to pay school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Morning is the happiest part of my day. The reason is that my shop gets very busy, selling milk and other household items to my customers in the village. This is when everyone one rushes to pick items that they need for their meals during the day, including breakfast. I make the day's largest sales in the morning. Morning hours makes me happy because I can already count how much profit I have made.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Insufficient school fees for my children is my biggest challenge. This is because I have been applying for employment but being unsuccessfully all the time. From my shop business, I get about KES 300 a day, only enough for food. I need to expand my business as its the only source of income that I can use to add to what my husband earns from his job.
