How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I now want to begin investing in livestock, mainly goat farming. I realize it will take some time because I don't have a clear source of income, but with perseverance and good money management, I can succeed in the charcoal-selling business. I wish I could start with a cow, but that is not going to be doable. As a result, investing in goats will result in me purchasing a cow. I would want to start the investment as soon as possible once I get some money.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The tremendous work that GiveDirectly put forth was commendable and considerate to every villager. During the initial gathering, we got excellent instructions that clarified our understanding of the parameters for registration. Reading the fly cards that we were given and hearing the instruction at the initial meetings helped us to prepare and make decisions. We appreciate the effort put into each step of the procedure, and we hope to work with you again soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Receiving the cash transfer from GiveDirectly felt like a breath of fresh air in my life. With a determined smile, I decided that it was finally time to transform our living conditions. The old house we had been crammed into was no longer tenable for my growing family, and I knew exactly how I wanted to utilize the funds. Choosing to invest in a spacious house was an easy decision for me. The thought of my children having more room to play and grow, without the constant feeling of overcrowding, was a dream come true. Therefore, I purchased the necessary construction materials that is iron sheets, poles, rafters, and roofing timbers. As the house began to take shape, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment that I had never experienced before. The exact cost of the materials and construction eluded me, as that was best left to the skilled hands of my helper whom I trusted. When the house was complete, and its walls stood as a testament, I turned my attention to the remaining funds. Ensuring my family's well-being was paramount, and I used the remaining amount to provide for our daily needs. With newfound hope, I am grateful to GiveDirectly for empowering me to create a better life for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had gone to look for some casual farm jobs on a neighbour's farm because I had nothing to eat in my house. Even as I accepted the job, I kept thinking about my family's well-being. I did not bring my phone because I knew I would be busy. My neighbours, with whom we were working, had their phones with them. Sometime in the afternoon, they all received messages on their phones, and I could tell they were happy. They asked if I had carried my phone since GiveDirectly sent the first transfer. I dropped everything and went for my phone, where I discovered that I, too, had received messages. I was overjoyed, and the first thing that came to mind was to buy food for my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My house was destroyed by fire, and I have not been able to rebuild it since. I was forced to stay in a small grass-thatched hut that was on the verge of collapsing. I tried everything I could think of to save money and buy building materials for a decent house, but nothing worked. My meager earnings from burning and selling charcoal and, at times, working on other people's farms were insufficient to support my family. The program has greatly improved my standard of living by allowing me to construct a decent iron-roofed house that is more stable than the grass-thatched house that has been my shelter for years. This is all I prayed for every day and could not achieve on my own. After years of attempting and failing due to financial constraints, I have finally moved into my new iron-roofed house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My house was burned down several years ago, and I lacked the financial resources to rebuild. As a result, I built a temporary grass-thatched hut in the hopes of upgrading to a better house in the coming years, which never happened. I had to settle for the hut because building a new home seemed impossible given that I am a subsistence farmer who works on other people's farms for pay, the majority of which goes to food alone. I am grateful to GiveDirectly because their assistance has completely transformed my life. After receiving the first transfer, my priority was to build a decent and spacious iron-roofed house. I finally bought enough building materials, which included 16 iron sheets, building poles, nails, and timber. I am now at peace, sheltering in my dream house, which would have taken years to complete if I had to do it on my own. In addition to the house, I had to pay fees for my children. I am relieved because, despite the financial difficulties, I was able to clear the fee arrears and they were able to continue their studies without interruptions due to fees. Finally, I did enough grocery shopping to ensure that my children had enough food to last us a month.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a family of fully time five members and we all live in a one-room house that also serves as a family kitchen. I am a widow doing casual jobs which gives me approximately $20 per month. The money caters for food only. The house I live with my family has a grass roof and it leaks during rain seasons. I will use $500 to build a two-room house that is spacious for the family and has privacy. I will also use $300 to buy six goats as an investment. Goats do survive the harsh climatic condition of our area. The remaining money will help me buy food for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have two children who work at Mombasa as casual laborers too. They came home on 1st January 2023 for the new year festival. The family enjoyed chapati and other delicious food like rice and meat. I felt very happy seeing my family uniting and eating together.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of food is the challenge I am currently facing. I do subsistence farming as my job. However, it is four years now without rain in the village. This has caused drought and affected my work. I turned to casual jobs which are not accessible. The family takes only one meal per day. This has affected my family health.
