How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to fence my land. I want to fence the land so that I can be able to lock up my two cows in one place and leave them to graze on their own. I will hence no longer have to tether them or spend a lot of time looking after them as they graze. Although I desire to do the fencing, I, however, do not have the money to do so. I spent the better part of the transfer on constructing the house that we had left pending for a while. I usually grow vegetables and sell them. I also usually sell milk when there is a surplus. The money that I get from the sales is what we use in purchasing food and buying other household necessities such as soap, sugar, etc. My husband on the other end is old and not able to work.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well when they organized an entry meeting with the community members before starting the enrollment process. The people got to understand what the program was all about. I would however like to urge them to move around on their own in the village when they come to conduct the census and not to walk around with the village elder. This is because when they walk alone, people in the community will feel free to talk with the GiveDirectly staff without the village elder interfering with them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent the entire transfer money on painting the house that we are still building. Before the transfers came, we had started the construction of the house but we were not able to finish it since the money was not enough. So when GiveDirectly came with the program to our village, we saw the opportunity to continue with the construction. We had built a permanent house. My husband is old and not able to work while as for me I usually grow vegetables and sell them as well. I also usually sell milk when there is a surplus. We hence didn't have the money to continue with the construction. We haven't completely finished the construction but we are happy seeing our house looking so good after being painted. We are hence so much grateful to GiveDirectly for the help.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Receiving that generous support without having to do anything in return gave me a great feeling right from the moment I received it. I was thankful that morning when I first saw the message as I had quite a lot of plans that I hoped to complete. I have been struggling with the construction of a new house, payment of school fees, and also ensuring that my children get their daily bread - burdens that stopped me from completing the construction work.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Seeing my long-time project of construction complete after receiving my first transfer is the biggest difference in my daily life. I will soon be moving into a spacious house that can comfortably accommodate my family members and also any visiting guest.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On receiving the first transfer, I was glad to finally use it in funding the construction work that had been on a halt over the past year. I had to replace the poles that were already rotting. I spent a total of KES36000 in obtaining iron sheets, nails, building poles, and also paid the labor cost to complete the construction that had been brought to a standstill by the strings of demands from the school where my children attend. With the remaining KES18000, I obtained a heifer at KES15000, and also utensils since most of the initial ones were old, broken, and rusty on the broken parts.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We are in our old age,we cannot work to earn money hence we solely depend on our children for upkeep. I have always wanted to live in a permanent house which i am struggling to finish constructing. Receiving this money means i will finally get to live in my dream house which has taken me close to 2 years now to finish. I need 25 bags of cement that would cost me Ksh 800 per bag and a tractor of sand at about Ksh 10,000,other building materials like window panes and bricks would take Ksh 50,000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening. During the day am always within the compound doing house chores and feeding my poultry. Its in the evening that i get time to catch up with my husband on how the day was as we take dinner.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am 68 years old and my husband is 75 years old ,we cannot do manual jobs due to old age. We depend on our children to provide for our basic needs and sometimes its difficult asking for more money than whay they give us. Therefore ,we struggle financially.
