How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I experienced changes in my life because, for one I was able to pay full school fees for my son for that term, something that I would have never been able to accomplish was it not for the cash transfers from the organization. Secondly, I now have a cow which I have been milking for the last two or so months so I no longer buy milk from vendors as I used to do in the past.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I believe that the organization transformed peoples lives in the village, myself included. I would not have managed to pay the school fees for the kids because of my low financial ability but due to the generosity of the organization, my son went to school and attended all his classes for that term without being sent back home. Apart from my case, there are other people who built decent houses using the trsnsfers, which probably they would have never done in the entire lifetime.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used the last transfers to do some school shopping for my son who was reporting for his first term in high school at that time. I had to part with approximately Kes 20000 for him to be admitted in school. Apart from that, I also bought a cow at a cost of around Kes 20000. I also managed to offset a loan I had accrued in the past that was roughly Kes 15000. What remained after the expenditures went into the purchase of food for the family and other miscellaneous expenses.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference I have in my life since I received this transfer from Give Directly is that I have money to take my son to secondary school next year. This has been my biggest worry because I was very sure my son will do well in his examinations. He has been performing well and I was sure he will pass his final examinations. I had promised to take him to a school of his choice. Time was running fast and casual work alone could not provide the amount of money needed to take him to school. I am feeling relieved because I have the money to take him to school. He did his part and I am happy I am going to do my part too. I really appreciate GD for this.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was in the evening when I was storying with my neighbours when I heard the phone beep. I never considered it important and went on with the story until one of my friends told me to attend to the phone. When I checked the phone, I was shocked and could not believe my eyes. They thought something was wrong and I had to step out to recollect myself. When I told them of what had happened, they too checked their phones since they are also GD recipients. It was a moment of joy for me.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my first transfer on repaying a loan I got from our table banking group. This is a loan I got when my son who was a candidate this year had been sent home for school fees and I did not know where I could get the money to pay the balance. This caused me a lot of stress because payment was due but I did not have the money to pay back the loan. The rest of the transfer, I have saved to help me cater for expenses which will come when my son joins secondary school next year. I feel relieved because I have the money already so he won't join late neither will I struggle to raise the money for the same.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means great change in my life as I will be able to buy salon equipment so that I may run a salon business which I was trained on and practiced before I lost my husband to long illness that saw my business collapse due to heavy hospital bill that he left behind. I will also us part of this transfer in paying fees to my daughter whom I was worried that will be sent back home due to fees arreas that I owe the school.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is usually in the evening when my children are back from school and we are able to share the days story together, these evening are made happier whenever there is food for the family after a days hustle.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life was two years ago that after losing my husband, I was not able to pay rent to my business premise in Nairobi, after I had stayed on deposit, the landlord kicked me out and I had to come back to our rural home with my children where to settle down I had to seek job in peoples farms and ask for money support from relatives.
