How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to be able to be able to educate my daughter fully who is in a medical college. It is much more easier to clear the fee right now having received a boost from GiveDirectly and we are more motivated to pull them through. My husband works as a driver at a local school and I am happy that with the transfers I was able to help him in payment of school fees. I feel so happy that I actually benefitted from this transfer and the investments that I made with it.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did well in giving us unconditional cash and giving us the freedom to choose what to do with the money. Having been given the freedom I feel so much empowered to have paid school fees for our children. At least we can now think of other meaningful investments.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used part of it KES 4000 to buy furniture Kes 5000 to buy a goat and Kes 20000 to buy poles for fencing compound and the remaining amount to buy food and clothes for family. I had for a long time wanted to fence our compound but the income that my husband got from his driving job was just enough to feed us and provide for the family. My husband would always encourage me to be optimistic saying that we would one day be able to fence our compound once our children are done with their secondary and tertiary education. When GiveDirectly came in, I saw it as an opportunity to fence our compound and make it look more decent. I am happy that I have been able to accomplish this and my compound now looks presentable and decent.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was about 11 p.m when I heard my phone vibrate. Upon checking, it was a message bearing the good news from Give directly. I was happy that the challenge of clearing school arrears would come to an end. I couldn't wait for the following day to send it to school.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Payment of school arrears for my three children has been my biggest difference in my daily life. This had been a challenge that had caused sleepless nights since we only depended on manual jobs and we couldn't afford to cater for school fees.We are so much indebted to Givedirectly for this great support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving the first transfer priority was the clearance of school fees arrears for my three children. With the transfer, I spent Kshs.30,000 in paying the fees. Am now happy that they are now settled in school and they are studying without being sent home to collect money. With Kshs.6,600 I spent fencing my land so that my livestock can freely herd when am away without trespassing other people's farms. With the remaining amount, I used to buy food and clothing for all my household members. I am happy that we now dress well and eat good meals we are all in good health. I am so grateful to Give directly for the great support.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means more income to our household and thus a better life for us, I have been operating a posho mill enterprise in the village and this has been our source of livelihood. I was not in a position to maximize profit from this business because of a financial challenge to restock materials and inputs for the enterprise. I will therefore plan KES 50000 of this money to stock more maize grains for my business and this will earn us more cash flow. Furthermore, school fees payment has been a challenge to us, I will set KES 40000 to pay school fees for my two children in Kenya Medical Training and Taita Taveta University. The remaining money will help me boost my poultry farming and earn more income.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son was recently employed in Mother Kelvin Hospital, this was great news to me and great relief for the family as he is no longer dependent on us. I was also happy as he has been giving us a helping hand financially.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constrain has been our main challenge as we do not have a stable income. We only rely on small businesses to provide for the family, this has affected the growth of my business now that the little profit we get goes to household needs. I have also been struggling to pay school fees for my two children pursuing their education in college.
