How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I do not have any new plan because the major one was to own a piece of land. It has been stressing me because every planting season I had to lease my friend's farms which were very expensive. Most of the time, I ended up not harvesting any yield because I could afford the fees needed. I am so glad that for now, I will not have to worry about the expenses needed and I will be preparing my farm in good time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a good job in my village. All went well, especially in making sure that all the needy families were fairly attended to. Our lives have now transformed in such a way that we all have decent houses, and a variety of livestock. Also, our children are now studying without any complications like before. I do not see any part that GiveDirectly needs a change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a portion of my second transfer on buying a piece of land (1 acre )at KES 25000. I used to lease people's farms for so many years which was expensive. This is because with the recent one, there were family disputes and I have been asked to relocate. I did not have the freedom even to cultivate the farms and I felt it would be wise if I could purchase the piece of land. It has been my dream to own it for a long but because of financial hardships, I couldn't afford it. I also bought iron sheets at KES 9100 and the labor charges of KES 2500. This was for the construction of a new house for my children. I later bought five mattresses at KES 12150 which were to replace the old beddings that had worn out. In addition to that, I bought three goats KES 8500 and I am proud to have them as the living assets that I can rely on. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I vividly remember it was around 6 am when I had traveled to Kilifi town for personal duties. I heard a message alert on my phone and after checking I realized that I had received the transfer. I felt happy for receiving such a huge amount of money which I had never received in my entire life. I had to return home to plan with my wife on how to spend the transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a piece of land is the biggest difference in my daily life. This is because I was constantly in clashes with the owner of the land where I use to farm since he was selling it out to someone else. This troubled me a lot since I had no other place for farming. I thank GiveDirectly for coming up with a cash transfer program at a time that I need it most. This has restored the peace of mind that I had lost for the last 9 months.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer to purchase an acre of land which costs KES 60,000 in total. I paid KES 25,000 as part of the cost of the land and the remaining to complete later on an installment basis. This is because the place where I use to farm doesn't belong to me. I was always receiving threats from the owner who wanted to sell it to another person. I had wished to acquire mine to avoid the conflict that was coming up. In addition, I bought 2 goats for KES 7,000 to boost my goat rearing which I had started earlier. I am currently constructing a decent kitchen since the one I had is collapsing using the remaining amount. I bought the required build materials and I had begun the construction.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means food security to my family. I do agriculture in my 2.5 acre piece of land using a hoe. I cultivate only 1 acre using the hoe which gives me one 90kg bag of maize which last for only one month. I plan to buy two oxen at a cost of $500 and a yoke which cost $80. This will help me cultivate all the 2.5 acres of land which will make me harvest approximately 5 bags of maize. This will last for five months. I will use the remaining amount to build a house for my children and buy mattresses for them.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest Part of the day is in the morning. This is the time am happy because God has given me chance to see another day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Last year 2020 when Covid-19 came to our country, we had lockdown in our county. As a mason I could not find any work to do and I have a family of nine members. Providing food for my family was a little bit very hard. Food insecurity is the biggest hardship I faced in my life.
