How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to save some of the money I receive in my business and buy a piece of land. A plot of 50 by 100 is going for $1000, which is my savings plan for the next year. I intend to build a single room that can be rented for business. I plan to use one room for my business as I rent others. I will have accomplished my financial goal of having a sustainable income every month.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Give directly has done well to enroll our village which has many poor families. The support funds have ensured that the children are back in school and most of the families without homes have built their own homes. Our area had water issues. The funds have helped most people install water meters and tap water in their compounds, others bought water tanks, which have enabled them to collect and store water during this rainy season. There is nothing that can be measured on the impact of the unconditional funds received from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband has been working as a guard in a nearby school, and we have two children together. Lately, it has been a struggle because he is the breadwinner, as I am a stay-at-home parent. The main challenge is budgeting for his source of income for all our expenses. Receiving these support funds for the first time was the only way we renovated our house from a two-roomed thatched house to a stone-built house with an iron roof and the little that remained covered $20 food for a week and paid $30 school fees for my children before my husband got paid. I changed my life and opened a business with $300, which bought a bale of second-hand clothing and a bale of second-hand bedsheets. The business has picked up well and at least I can make $50 from hawking both the clothes and bedsheets in a week. The remaining $200 is in my savings account because the profit is enough to cater to our daily expenses. I saved for a rainy day in case I needed to rent a place and centralize my business. My husband was relieved and so happy to see that I opened a business with the cash received from GiveDirectly.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
While storytelling with my children after an evening meal, I received a message on my phone. when I checked, it was the first transfer of KES 55000.00. I was overjoyed and walked out of the sitting room laughing in happiness because I had never received nor seen a huge amount like the one I received in my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am grateful for the help I received from GiveDirectly. For years we have been living in an insecure madhouse. After receiving the first transfer, I was able to collaborate with my husband and we bought some blocks to renovate and make our house more secure than it was. A great shout-out to GiveDirectly for empowering us to have a nice house as a family. Currently, we are living in a well-secured house and this is a result of the goodwill from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, the priority was to renovate my madhouse by making it more firm. Therefore, I bought some building blocks for KES 30000.00 and I am technically replacing the mad with the blocks. By so doing the house will be firmer and the heavy rain which usually sweeps away people's houses will not sweep mine. I also bought two doors; a wooden door and a burglary door for KES 7000.00 and KES 10000.00 respectively. This was to ensure my items in the house were safe. Initially, they were not safe because I was using an iron sheet as a door. I also paid KES 3000.00 school fees for my children so that they are retained in school without disturbances for better learning. Thereafter, I bought a sack of maize for KES 7000.00 to ensure food security for my family. My husband is a watchman at one of the public primary schools, we could not make it to all of these since his salary of KES 6000.00 per month is not sufficient to cater to our basic needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I went for a certificate course in tailoring and as we speak i have started the business here in my house using a second hand machine i bought from a friend. The machine is having so many breakdown something that is causing me losing most of my customers. This compound is very big and that is something if i manage to get a new machine and enough variety of materials, it will be a big win for me and my family. Imagine with the machine in this state but on a good day i make like 350KES. So i plan to use 30000KES to buy a new machine which will definitely help me raise my daily earnings hence supporting my husband who is a watchman.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I use to hear of this organization (GiveDirectly) from last year but one with many people celebrating it's existence. The story was it is changing lives of so many people and that is something no one can miss a chance to experience. So when you came for the community sensitization (BARAZAS), that was when i knew God has answered our prayers. Am really happy and you being here today has changed my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My biggest concern now is the state of my house. It was built 6years ago using very weak materials and because of ants almost all the poles are finished. From the look you can see how scary it is to sleep inside with small children. It is not safe at all. This condition is affecting me psychologically.
