How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life has completely changed for the better when I improved my farm. I used part of the money to paddock my farm to enable me to concentrate on other activities instead of looking after the cows. I then have a lot of hope to improve my home once complete the house that I have been constructing. I saved part of the money in order to use it in finishing and furnishing the house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that my compound now looks nice. This is because the transfers enabled me to fence it. Also, my cows will no longer be invading my farm and destroy the crops. Due to this, I can easily leave and livestock to graze alone while I attend to some other issues.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning after waking up when I realized that I had an unread message. I then requested my son to help me read its contents. When he informed me that the promised money had already been debited into my account, I became so happy.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent some amount from my first transfer to fence my compound. Since I had some poles, I purchased a barbed wire, nails and paid the cost of labor. I spent the remaining amount to buy a cow. I believe that it will be calfing soon and my income from the dairy project will increase.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This money has come as a relief for me.I am no longer able to work in the farm because of my age and complications that come with it.I always wish that I could have a cow since through it I will be assured of an income. It is also something that I can still handle at this age because it is less strenous.Receiving this money will enable me buy one.I also intend to renovate my mud-walles house by replacing it with timber. After my wife passed on two years ago,I do not have anyone to smear it from time to time hence a wooden one will be easier to manage.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I spend most of the day alone mostly herding my heifers. It is always lonely here and this often saddens me.In the afternoon,my grandchildren return from school and as usual children enjoy their grandfather's company. They are always around my homestead till late in the evening when they return to their homes. While they are here, they help me with some of the household chores i.e collecting firewood and fetching water hence giving me some time to rest. This is often the happiest part of my day
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The last maize harvest I had was over five years ago. There has been a maize crop disease that has wiped out the crop year in year out.Since I cannot do any casual jobs, this has exposed me to hunger and a greater dependence on my children who also have their own families.Aside from the other challenges of being left alone after the death of my wife, this is the biggest hardship I have faced.
