How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that emerged recently is to own at least two dairy cows that will enable me to get plenty of milk for commercial purposes. Currently, I have been relying on meagre jobs which are as well tiring. Therefore I believe that the cows will empower me enough to start a new business supplying milk within my village and earn an income. Thereafter I won't strain a lot to meet my family's needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a very commendable job in my entire region by ensuring that every needy household was enrolled. Through that, our living standard has improved greatly since now have assets like houses, and livestock and have been able to take our children to schools. I have not seen or heard anything that GiveDirectly failed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on paying school fees for my two grandchildren who are in secondary schools. Being their guardian has quite been so challenging because I did not a stable source of income. It is my prayer and wishes that once they graduate, they will be able to secure good jobs hence eradicating poverty life. Additionally, I paid the mason KES 19000 to finish building my house which was still under construction. I am happy very soon I will be able to move into my new house where I will no longer face any hiccups like being rained on. I also bought two goats at KES 7000 that serves as assets to lean on in case of any challenge. I also cleared my medical bill since I was diagnosed with bilharzia a few weeks ago. I am now thankful and happy that I am doing so well. With the remaining amount, I bought food and nice clothes.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was very early in the morning when I woke up to brush my teeth to kick start the day’s hustle when I heard my phone vibrate twice. Being unable to read, I gave it to my grandchild who confirmed that I had received the first transfer from GiveDirectly. The information brightened my morning; I almost ululated in happiness but I contained myself since I did not want people to know about it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, I was always up and down in the forest cutting logs to make charcoals for sale for a living. It was a tiring task that I had no alternative rather than doing it no matter what. I am now relieved after receiving the first transfer from GiveDirectly. Through the transfer, I was able to take a rest from the tiring job as well as start an income-generating activity that will aid me in catering to my family's needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, the first thing I thought of was farming. I bought a plowing jembe for KES 9500.00 that would aid me during the farming season. I also bought two cows for KES 26000.00. I also took KES 5000.00 and took my husband to the hospital since he was not feeling well. Thereafter, I decided to construct a local rental house so that they can serve me as an income-generating activity. For this house, I cannot clearly state how much I used but what I am proud of is that the house is now ready and it has a tenant who rented.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improving my agricultural methods. I have a 4 acre piece of land and use the traditional method of farming during rains season. I use a hoe for cultivation and do agriculture only in 2 acres. In the two acres I harvest four bags of 90kg each which last for four months. I will buy two oxen and a yoke at a cost of KES 70000. I will also use KES 30000 to fence my piece of land and also buy fertilizers. The oxen will help me cultivate all the four acres and harvest approximately 9 bags of maize. The family will have food for the whole year.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My last born son had a very colorful wedding last year on November 2022. That was the first wedding to happen in my village. My reputation and respect grew high in the village. The wedding brought happiness in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our area hardly rains. We last had rains two years ago. This has cause drought and famine in the village. Accessing food for the family is hard since I depend on casual work which is not guarantee to get every day. Famine is the challenge I am facing in life.
