How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes we do have a new goal of buying a piece of land. Currently we are staying in a very small piece of land such that we cannot engage fully in farming practices yet it should be the main source of livelihood to us. Now that GiveDirectly has helped us as a family to acquire some of the things that we otherwise thought would not have been achieved, we look forward to accumulating money from the work that we do and be able to buy a piece of land within the next one year.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by enrolling everyone within our village without any bias or discrimination. This has led to uplifting of so many lives of different people and has brough some form of equality within the village. It was even more impressive that they did so without taking any bribes. We are so grateful as a community that we were part of the beneficiaries of the program
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 25000 of the second transfer to buy a dairy cow. We already had one initially but we thought of having an additional dairy cow such that we would be able to have enough milk produced all year round and be able to engage in other meaningful activities such as buying land from the savings made from milk. I used another KES 25000 to buy building materials for our new house. We have been living in a mud house and always looked forward to building a better house and when we received money from GiveDirectly we made a decision to build a blocked house. I am a mother of one and my husband works as a security officer and the amount of income that we received from our work would not be enough to put up one before. We are so happy that we fibally got to afford to buy building materials and we are looking forward to building our new house soon.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around midday and I had just taken my cattle for grazing at a nearby forest. I had seen people happy and rushing to the nearby mpesa shops earlier that morning. I did not bother to check my phone but when I checked and confirmed that I had received money from GiveDirectly, I felt so happy. Straight away I called my husband and shared the good news with him and he was equally happy. I could not get over the fact that I was finally going to be able to fence my compound and bring to an end the conflicts that always arose due to livestock invading neighbours compounds and causing disturbance!.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
GiveDirectly has brought significant change in my life and that of my family. Having fenced my compound has seen me be at peace with my neighbours. I was always at loggerheads with my neighbors due to my chicken invading their garden and resulting to losses. Right now I am at peace and I have been able to add more chicken in my farm. I am looking forward to collecting more than 25 eggs per day and bringing about change in living standards for my family. This investment will also see me be more self reliant and even support my husband in running other major family errands.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 25000 to fence my compound. It is something that I had always desired to do to be able to bring an end to conflicts that always arose whenever my chicken invaded neighbours compounds. Chicken rearing was a passion to me but had to sell quite a number of my chicken to reduce conflicts that had disturbed my peace a lot. I am happy that my compound is now fully fenced and I have been able to increase the number of chicken that I rear to more than 50 up from only 10 that I had before. I used KES 20000 to buy a dairy cow and the remainder was used to buy food and clothing for my children.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
First things first, receiving this money means that my dream of buying a dairy cow will come to fruition. I do not have milk at the moment, the only one cow I have has weaned so I purchase a liter every day at KES 40 to cook tea for my family. It is hardly enough and also costly. There is an abundance of pastures around here since I live next to the Siongiroi forest. Therefore, I will be able to maximize the resource and be self-sufficient in milk production. My budget for the purchase is KES 45000. I will use the other money for maize farming.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We had planted beans sometimes in April and we got a bumper harvest. We harvested 4 bags and sold about 2.5 bags and got KES 12000, where we bought more chicken which has since laid eggs. It brought us a lot of joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband works as a security officer. The job hardly sustains us and cannot be depended on. Other times they do not get paid or the payment delays which bring about uncertainty in terms of family income. It suffices to say we do not have a stable income and that has caused us a lot of suffering.
