How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the coming of GiveDirectly, I was living in a grass thatched house. My life is currently different because I have been able to build a new house, spacious and iron roofed. Apart from the house, I also have heifers that I am keeping in my homestead. These are living assets that I can readily depend on in case of a financial need.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has done well in enrolling us and giving us the transfer and allowing us the have the freedom to plan for ourselves. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I was in the process of building a new house but I couldn't finish this project because I lacked the money to buy the remaining materials. When I received my second transfer, I spent it on buying iron sheets, timber and nails in order to finish the construction of the new house. I have been living in a grass thatched house and my desire was to build an iron roofed house, which I have achieved having completed building through this transfer. I also paid for the labour cost and expenses incurred during the construction of this house. Apart from this, I also purchased two heifers that I now rear in my homestead. I am expecting to benefit from the milk that these heifers will be producing. I will be selling the surplus to earn an income. I spent the remaining amount to pay some medical bills and also buying food for my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life ever since I started receiving these transfers is that I am now peaceful. I finally build a house using this money. I have been longing to construct a big house but due to my financial status, I could not afford it. My previous house was in a very poor condition and whenever it rained we would be rained on. We would sleepless nights during such seasons which was very traumatizing. My grandchildren who are orphans too never had peace since when it's time to sleep they were forced to sleep at my neighbor's house which was uncomfortable at times. But ever since I constructed this house, the problem is solved. Secondly, whenever they wanted to study, they found it hard because the house was not spacious and this affected their academic performance. Ever since I constructed this house they have been studying comfortably without any interference. I am so grateful for the support I got from this organization.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 am when my grandson told me about the good news that GiveDirectly had sent to me my first transfer. Since I was admitted at the hospital I requested my son to withdraw the money so that we can clear the hospital bill. I was very happy even I felt I was so much better from the illness that I had after receiving the news. I knew my family would have strained their efforts in order to pay the medical bill.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I have always wanted to own a permanent house. When I got the transfers the first goal that came to my mind was building the house. I spent a larger portion of my first transfer on buying building materials. I bought several iron sheets, building poles and paid KES 3000 for labor. Finally, there was hope for constructing a new house since the previous one was very small and could not accommodate us all. In addition to that, I also paid school fees for my grandchildren who are orphans and are under my care. Then I cleared my hospital bill since I had been admitted at that time when the transfers were sent. I bought enough foodstuffs for my family that would take us a month's time with the remaining amount of money.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
We live in a house that is in a poor condition. The walls are badly damaged and the roof is leaking, making it unbearable during rainy seasons. I also fear for our safety and I am afraid that it might collapse while we are asleep. To curb the situation, I have always desired to build a new hut that would temporarily serve the purpose. However, I have not been able to achieve it because of insufficient funds. I have now changed my plans and I will construct a permanent house, that will save me the agony of replacing grass every four months which is quite expensive. In addition to this, I will seek treatment to ease the constant chest pains that I have been experiencing for the past one year as a result of engaging in very heavy casual jobs. I will also purchase goats for rearing in order to create a stable source of income for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My day is full of struggles as I have to spend longer hours in the bushes uprooting trumps to burn charcoal. This wears out my energy because I undertake the duties on an empty stomach. It is only in the evening when I get enough rest as I take supper, something that makes it the happiest of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Casual jobs such as burning charcoal, harvesting aloevera and cutting sisal fibres are my major source of livelihood. I earn very little from these yet the negatively impact my health. I have to do them because of my two grandchildren, whom their father has completely neglected them after their mother's death. I am struggling to provide food, medical and educational needs for the family since my husband is too aged to work.
