How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next one year and beyond I am planning to start dairy keeping business. Right now I own some dairy cattle but on a free range. I intend to sell the breed that I have and using the money to buy a better breed that will be under zero grazing. With this, I will increase milk production in my family as well as change the living standards of my family as well.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving cash as a form of aid. This gives different people who have different needs an opportunity to meet their needs. The fact that the money is not conditioned makes it even more excellent since people can freely choose to spend the money in what they are so comfortable with and in things that will bring forth more satisfaction too.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used the entire $550 of the second transfer to buy goats for rearing. I had already planned to do this way before receiving the transfer. We settled on goat keeping as a family since it was the most worthy investment considering their gestation period and how they would easily reproduce. Moreover, we have an open grazing field provided by the government for people living within the area where we are just supposed to pay some amount to be able to use it. I bought 22 goats in total and some have already reproduced as at today. It will henceforth be very much easy for me to get to meet the needs of my family like payment of school fees very easily as well as meet other needs as well. Before receiving this transfer, I have been relying on motorcycle business where I earned a living by offering transport services. I feel like the market is already flooded and I am even thinking of quiting the game soon and fully concentrating on goat keeping and other types of farming. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for making me realize a dream that would have continued to remain as just a dream had I not received the transfer.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I vividly recall that it was 6 pm when I was engaged in my everyday duties at my workstation. Then suddenly, I was turtled by a message alert showing that I had received money from Segovia technology. I was so excited and happy. I then met a friend who is also my village mate and we shared the good news. We then proceeded to withdraw the fund. This was the most unique and happiest day in our lives thus I am grateful for the support that impacted my life positively.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to replace the beddings of my family with the new ones. We had worn out beddings but we had no choice but to put up with them due to financial constraints, the little that I made from my Boda Boda business was prioritised on food and school fees. I am happy that I can comfortably host visitors. Additionally, I started a goat rearing business and I am optimistic that I would be able to earn an income from it soon. I am forever grateful for the support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My ambition of starting a goat rearing project came to reality when I received funds from GiveDirectly. I had the dream but I was unable to realise it due to financial constraints. I am a Boda Boda rider married and blessed with 5 children who are still under my care at the moment. Receiving funds from GiveDirectly came has the most amazing blessing in my life, I was able to purchase four high-breed goats at KES 30,000. I then bought two bags of maize worth KES 10,000. Lastly, I bought clothes and decent beddings for my family. I am grateful for the transfer that has lifted my living standards.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
For the last 5 years, I have had a desire to venture into sheep rearing business but that has not materialized because of my low income. I am a motorbike taxi rider earning a profit of KES 200 per day. I use the whole amount to buy food for my family since I am the sole breadwinner. I have developed a chest problem as a result of riding a motorbike for long and it is time to abandon it. My doctor told me that if I continue it may get worse and that has been my source of worry. I live next to the vast Chepalungu Forest and farmers are allowed to take their animals for grazing inside the forest. Sheep multiply very fast and I feel like it is the only opportunity for me to become financially independent.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In February this year, my cow calved and that made me very happy since I do not have to buy milk for domestic use. My children can now take it to their satisfaction unlike before when I used to buy 2 liters per day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Raising my children's school fees has been a challenge that I have grappled with for the last 10 years. I have 3 children who have completed high school but are yet to join college because of lack of school fees. It pains me when I see them idling around when their peers are in various institutions of higher learning. I feel like I have failed as a parent and I do not think I will ever forgive myself.
