How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming years, I plan to focus on farming and make it my primary source of income. With the money I earn, I hope to build a better house for my family, as the one we currently live in is very small and made of grass and mud walls. I want to create a home that is more durable and safe, ideally constructed with iron sheets. This change will provide my family with a comfortable living space and a sense of security. Additionally, I aim to expand my farming activities to increase our income further. Ultimately, my goal is to improve our quality of life and create a stable future for my family.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did an excellent job teaching us the best ways to use the money. The officers came to our households with respect and happiness, asking questions accurately and listening to our needs. I have not noticed any mistakes in their process; everything was perfect and well-organized. The support we received truly impressed me, and I felt valued throughout the entire experience. Overall, I am very grateful for their assistance and the positive impact it has had on our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After the devastating floods destroyed our agricultural farms, my family faced a bleak future filled with uncertainty. Receiving the cash transfer felt like a lifeline, providing us with an opportunity to rebuild our lives and invest in agriculture once more. I decided to use $210 to purchase sheep, aiming to improve our living situation and establish a source of income for the future. The sheep also serve as a constant reminder of the support we received from GiveDirectly. Furthermore, I spent $80 to lease land and $50 to manage my farm, enabling us to grow food and secure our family's basic needs. With this additional capital, I feel more confident in providing for my three children and my wife, seeing this as the best investment I could make for our future. This investment is crucial, as it will indirectly help me cover my children's school fees. With the remaining $110, I bought food to ensure my family has enough to eat. In the past, I relied on casual jobs and burning charcoal to meet our basic needs, but those sources of income were often unreliable. Now, thanks to the support from GiveDirectly, we have a stable supply of food at home.We are incredibly grateful to GiveDirectly because our lives have truly changed for the better. This assistance has given us hope and a chance to work toward a brighter future. I am determined to make the most of this opportunity for my family's sake, ensuring we never have to face such hardship again.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was a normal day for me, relaxing at home, while my wife accompanied our son to a prayer day. Since my wife didn’t have a phone, I lent her mine. When she returned that day, her excitement was unusual. She shared the news that I had received cash from GiveDirectly. We were happy and made plans to manage the cash the next day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has made a significant difference in our lives, especially regarding our house and food situation. Before the transfer, we were living in a temporary tent because our home had been destroyed by floods. Now, with the transfer, we were able to demolish the old house and build a new, one-room shelter that provides us with much-needed security. Regarding food, the situation was dire after losing our maize crops. We struggled to obtain food, relying heavily on charcoal production and casual jobs. The transfer allowed us to buy enough food to meet our needs, reducing the stress and uncertainty about our daily meals. Thank you, God. Without your support, I don’t know what I would have done.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My house was partially destroyed by floods. Although some materials were salvageable, the house was in a poor state. Before receiving the transfers, we had lived in a temporary tent outside our compound for a month because we had no other option. Once I received the money, my priority was to secure better shelter for my family. I spent $40 on demolishing the damaged house and building a one-roomed, muddy-walled house where we now live. I’m grateful to GiveDirectly for this support. In addition to the house, I had lost all my maize crops to the floods at a farm; I was expecting more than 20 bags of maize. My farm was submerged, and water is still lying on it. With food being essential, obtaining it became almost a nightmare. My wife and I worked hard through charcoal production and casual jobs to meet the needs of our three children. I used part of the transfer to buy enough food, spending a total of $64 to ensure we had something to put on the table. Furthermore, most of our clothes were also destroyed in the floods, so I spent $60 to buy new clothes for everyone in my household. To ensure sustainability, I invested $13 in preparing and planting a kitchen garden with black nightshade. We have already started harvesting and selling from the garden, earning about $15 so far, which has helped with our daily needs.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
After experiencing flash floods in our location, my life has never been easy. I am struggling to put food on the table for my family of five. We also lost all of our clothing and bedding to floods. I see hope with GiveDirectly's cash transfer, I will plan my first transfers $140 to buy food and clothing for my family. I feel ashamed that we are living in a tent after losing our house during flash floods. I will prioritize building a habitable house for my family and this will cost me $400 of my transfers. To be food secure, I will set aside $230 to lease a piece of land and cultivate maize crop.
What is the happiest part of your day?
It was at midnight when the whole village was flooded with water. The water was flowing violently and the air was filled with screams. I was desperate and worried about losing my three children aged seven years, five years and two years. Lucy enough some youths in my village came to our rescue and we were taken to the higher ground as we waited for the evacuation team. I was filled with happiness to see all of my family members safe.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am not formally employed and therefore casual labour is my main source of income. We experienced flash floods in April 2024 and this came with a fair share of challenges. It is now difficult to get any casual job as all our farms were swept away by floods. I used to get employment on those farms as a farm attendant and this helped me a lot to feed our family. This has exposed my family to extreme hunger. We at times take porridge as a meal. I was forced to look for an alternative source of income and I ventured into charcoal burning. We had one house which was brought down by flash two months ago. I am struggling financially and I cannot afford to build a decent house for my family. We are now living in a tent which is not habitable.
