How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Immediately l accomplished my initial goal, I came up with a new plan of buying goats. At the moment, I have bought 10 goats worth KES 30,000. Previously, I just had only one goat, and this could not be of any great help in the hour of need. Having a herd of goats will be more beneficial to my family and me, because when in the hour of need, we shall be able to sell some in order to raise some money. I am so happy that my life has been positively transformed.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well in supporting the less fortunate in some communities financially. As a result of direct cash transfer, our lives have positively changed. For instance, in the entire villages where GoveDirectly works, there are a number of positive projects that are ongoing. People have used the transfer to buy livestock as well as build new houses. There is nothing that I have witnessed that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a total of KES 30,000 from my most recent transfers on buying 10 goats which have currently increased my asset value. As a matter of fact, I have in the recent past earned the respect that I did not have at first. In addition, I spent KES 5,000 to pay school fee arrears for my only son who is in grade 4. I had been struggling to raise his school fees due to lack of a reliable source of income, a situation that had made his fees accrue. However, from both the first and the second transfers, I managed to completely offset the arrears. Lastly, I spent KES 6,000 and KES 4,000 on buying a bed and a mattress respectively. I am so glad that nowadays, I spend in more comfortable bedding, what I had never imagined could come to pass in my life. Previously, I had no mattress and we were just using mats and sacks. Thanks to GiveDirectly for such a great help.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I am a cook at a certain school and I had already reported to work that morning. I was serving my pupils in the morning when I heard my phone ringing, a message alert. I checked the message as I served and to my surprise, I had received my first transfer from GiveDirectly. I could not hold back the joy that I felt. I knew through this transfer, I could now renovate my house using iron sheets.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My living house had several shortcomings which I wasn't able to fix due to lack of financial resources. It was not spacious enough and its roofing was built with coconut tree leaves which required to be replaced every time. This was tiresome and on several occasions, whenever it rained then it could leak uncontrollably. I am at peace now because through the transfer, I was able to purchase 26 pieces of iron sheets, nails and timber for roofing. I also built an extension of another single room to make it more spacious. It would have taken a long time for me to achieve this considering that I spend most of my income on the basic needs like food. My husband depends on casual jobs which are at times not reliable. Renovating my house with long lasting iron sheets makes the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of my first transfer on renovating my living house. Its roof was built using coconut tree leaves and my plan was to renovate its roof using iron sheets. It was also not spacious enough thus I built an extension of an additional single room. I purchased 26 pieces of iron sheets at KES 26000, nails and timber to renovate the roof. In addition to this, I also spent KES 10000 on purchasing a new bed and a matress. I replaced the old mattress and bed that I have been using for many years. Apart from these, I also bought three goats at KES 7500. My aim is to keep them so that I can sell the offsprings in the future to pay for my children's school fees. They are currently in lower levels of education. I also paid KES 5000 for my child school fees in a private school and the rest on buying food stuffs such cereals to take us for long time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been replacing the roof of my house regularly, say after every 1 year because it's grass-thatched. This is so costly and I have wished to replace it with some iron sheets but this has never been possible due to lack of money. My children has been suffering from frequent colds since they are rained on especially during the rainy season. Receiving this money will mean good health to my family since I intend to spend utmost $400 of my transfers to have the roof replaced. The remaining amount will help me to buy oxen and an ox-plough to upscale my farming because as of now, I use a hoe. This will guarantee me more harvest and hence, food security to my household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I consider the evening as the happiest part of my day because it is at this time when I get ample time to rest from my day's work. Unlike in the morning and afternoon hours when I get more tired of the work which I get involved in.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The lack of a stable source of income has been the biggest hardship that I have ever faced in my life. Currently, I work as a cook, and the most I earn is $7 per week. This income is very minimal and it can not fully cater to our basic needs. Sometimes, we skip meals, and also my children are sent out of school due to a lack of fees something that has robbed away my joy.
