How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I hope to start a new business of hiring catering items like utensils, chairs, tents and the like. I believe that once I will be able to acquire the finances and open this business, I believe that it will uplift my living standard since it will be an additional income. This means that I will no longer struggle to raise fees for my children nor will I strain in fending for their other basic needs.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by visiting each household in the entire village without living anyone out. Also after the enrolment, I was promised that I would receive my money after a certain duration which I am glad was fulfilled. Additionally, I was asked to choose what to purchase according to my needs. I don't see anything new they should introduce even as they move to the next village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $200 of my second transfer on paying fees for my two sons pursuing nursing and three are in primary school. Paying their fees has been a major challenge because my spouse and I did not have a stable source of income. The little we could earn could not sustain all our basic needs and therefore sometimes we had to borrow loans from microfinance. It is now a relief to me because at least for this particular academic year, I will not be bothered with the issue of fees. To add to that, I used $300 of the money to boost my business of hawking new clothes from town to town. I am glad that the business is running perfectly fine with good returns despite the few challenges. I thank God I am not where I used to be. I can settle the bills on time and even save a little for any emergency. With the remaining amount, I bought food for my family which took us almost two weeks.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I found myself ululating in happiness having received such a huge amount of money. The money came at around 6:00 pm and I made an effort to call and say a word of thank you to GiveDirectly the following day.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the business that I have been able to start. The income that I get from it has been able to help me sustain my family quite well. Before I received the money I did not have this business and I only relied on farming and poultry which was not very promising at all. I am now leading a happier and more financially stable family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 40700 to improve my business of selling clothes and used the remaining amount to pay school fees for my children and to buy food for family. Before receiving payments I use to rely on small scale farming to make a living and this often left us broke and without a means of survival. Upon receiving the transfer I made a conscious decision to invest the money in clothes selling business and I am happy to report that currently my business is doing much better and therefore our standards of living have also risen.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a business woman for over ten years now rearing chicken at home as well as operating a small kiosk where I sell fast moving commodities such as food and vegetables. My business has been heavily affected by the corona pandemic as I could not afford to buy more stock as the profit margin kept on dropping. Getting this transfer from GiveDirectly would mean I start a fresh my chicken business whereby I will spend 25,000 KES on renovating the structure and buying 15 more chicken. I will also spend 10,000 KES on buying stock for my kiosk. I believe through this businesses I will be able to have a reliable source of income to cater for my family of 8 basic needs. I will also spend 20,000 on school fees for my 3 children in college.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Last month my son who is working in the city came home. He brought so many gifts for me and the family. As we had no food at that time, it was enjoyable moment for us as we rejoiced together. We ate, had fun and danced together. This was one of the remarkable moments of the year in my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Due to the drought experienced in the region, farming which used to be my economic activity has been unreliable. Providing my family of eight the basic needs such as food, health care and school fees has been challenging. My children who are in primary school are sometimes sent home for school fees which has negatively affected their academic performances. Therefore hunger, lack of school fees are some of the challenges my family is facing.
