How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My next goal is for me to be able to purchase a parcel of land. This is because the one that I own is small. I plan to achieve this dream by saving up some money from the farm produce profits to accomplish my new goal. I am grateful for the support that I received that impacted my life wonderfully.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has uplifted the lives of so many people in my village, individuals have gained financially, we have new houses, people paid for school fees and others bought dairy cows. It is a milestone like no other thus I am grateful for the support. In my opinion, I have not seen anything that has not been done the way it should have.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Building a decent house for my family has been my innermost desire for a long time. Though this was not possible due to financial constraints. I am a mother of three children and I depend on farming to earn an income. Therefore, when I received my transfer I used KES 20,000 in building a house. The one that I had before was grass-thatched and old. Secondly, I thought of buying a cow to cut down on the cost of buying milk daily. I am happy that I was able to accomplish a lot in a short time.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
That day, my neighbors received their transfers early from 6 am but mine was delayed. At about a half past eight while taking tea. That's when I received a message alert on my phone. On checking, I confirmed that I had received the eagerly awaited KES 55,000 GiveDirectly transfers. I was very excited about receiving the good news, I hurriedly prepared and went to withdraw the money the same day at around noon.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is the purchase of my dairy cow. This has led to the availability of adequate milk for feeding my family. My kids are now very grateful to GiveDirectly for the dairy cow because they can drink milk unlike before when they seldom drank. Additionally, I am also grateful to GiveDirectly for the decent clothing which I bought for my family. Therefore there's no more discrimination based on clothing.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since the outbreak of the maize pandemic about 10 years ago life has been quite a struggle. As a mother of three to fend for the family I normally rely on my husband who works as a livestock broker. During enrollment, my goal was to purchase a dairy cow. True to my word when I received my transfers, I spent KES 37,000 on a dairy cow. This is because I used to rely on my parents-in-law's cows for milk where we used to get a cup or two for the past two years. Since I bought my dairy cow I now milk a liter each day hence no more milk expenses. Secondly, I spent KES 7,000 on the latest clothing fashion for my family which is more decent. compared to before when we used to rely on second-hand clothes. Additionally, I spent KES 4,200 on a bag of maize. The remaining KES 5,000 I have saved towards the purchase of trees for the construction of a better house.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better and more satisfying lifestyle. We depend solely on farming to earn a living and without a stable income, raising a family of six is difficult. I plan on buying two dairy cows with this money as cattle are prestigious and valuable investment in our area because it provides us with milk for consumption and sale. Hence, owning two will be a great boost to my family. I will also use KES 30,000 of the funds to build a two-roomed house that will accommodate all of us comfortably then use the current house as a kitchen.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Two weeks ago, my third-born son was born. I am thankful to God because he is healthy and growing well. We feel blessed to having another member of the family who has brought us happiness. We are looking forward to him growing up healthy and strong.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints are a challenge currently. My husband works at a nearby market on a casual basis to supplement the income we get from the farm which has greatly reduced due to bad weather conditions. He earns KES 250 per day from which he has to pay school fees for our two school-going children. Currently, we have school fees in arrears that may make them not sit for end-of-year examinations.
