How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before GiveDirectly visited our village, I lived in a small leaky house that anytime it rained even at night, we would wake up and move to a corner. The small house also doubled as kitchen and it made my children to endure difficult times doing their studies because we always used firewood that emit a lot of smoke. It is the transfer I received that I used to settle my daughters high school fees and saved some which I later used in admitting my son in form one. Joining form one came with a lot of responsibilities and I believe that without the cash transfer that I received my son would have not joined high school because her sisters fees had already overwhelmed us. It is the education of these children that we believe once they complete and get employed shall change our fortune.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I think GiveDirectly did well in giving us money because we were able to meet divergent needs. They also did well in taking time to reach each household without any discrimination. I do not see anything that GiveDirectly did wrong in fact I am happy for the change that I have seen in our village.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used part of my second transfer in buying cement, sand, windows and metal door to complete the construction of my new house. Without these transfers I would still be living in a small leaky house that could hardly accommodate our daily activities. The remaining amount, I was able to pay school fees for my children who had a lot of fee balance carried over from the previous term and had been sent back home. I had actually feared that my children would miss their mid term exams.
