How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is currently different since I have been able to clear paying the loan that I had. This would have taken me more time if I had to continue paying on my own. Also, with the transfers, I was able to clear paying this year's school fees for my two children who are in high school. Due to this, I now have enough time to look next years school fees. My children will also improve in their performance since they will not be missing their classes like before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Some spouses had left their matrimonial homes while other men were living as singles due to hard economic times. With the coming of GiveDirectly, some single men married as they had money to use in paying dowry and most of the spouses who had left their matrimonial homes came back. This led to prosperity of many families in our community and due to this, I can proudly say that GiveDirecty did well by bringing families together. I do not see anything that they did not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I decided to buy two heifers using part of my second transfer. I settled on this so that it will increase in number within a short time compared to buying a dairy cow. Also, I spent some amount to repay a loan that I had in a Sacco. We decided on this as a family so that it would enable us to concentrate on other projects. On the remaining amount, I bought enough food and other household necessities to last us for some time.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving transfers from Give Directly is that I now own my own dairy cow. The cow has been of great help. I no longer spend money on buying milk. This helps me to save and even earn more by selling excess liters. Apart from that, I was also able to pay my sons school fees. I usually work on casual in order to pay my bills but most of the time, I end up not paying them since I don't earn enough. This is because casual jobs are not reliable and I at times go without finding a contract to do on other days. I am happy that I was able to clear the first term's fees and that my son will not be sent home for school fees this term.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was just preparing to wake up when my spouse who had my phone told me that the money from Givedirectly was here. I got so excited and immediately woke up and thanked God for it. I knew for certain that the cow I always dreamt of having wouls materialize!
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent KES 35000 of my first transfer to buy a dairy cow for rearing. Previously I used to spend a lot of money on milk for our daily use since I didn't own any livestock. I am glad that right now I spend no money on milk. I instead earn more through selling the surplus. In addition to buying a cow, I also paid KES 5000 for my son's school fees who is in secondary school. I used the rest of the transfer to clear the loans I took to facilitate my son's initiation ceremony over the December holidays

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been desiring to own a dairy cow since the one I have, is a borrowed one. I am planning to use my first transfer of 350 USD to purchase a dairy cow and the rest 250 USD, I will use to buy food and clothing for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My normal day starts by checking if the cow has enough food for the day before going to work in other people's farm (weeding, fencing, among others) which i am paid an average of 2 USD a day. Therefore, the happiest part of my day is in the evening after being paid my dues knowing that my family will be catered for.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is lack of school fees to educate my children. I have two children; one in standard seven and the other one is in secondary school. I spend 150 USD for secondary and 20 USD for Primary School per year which is hard to come by. I therefore intend to buy a cow to supplement the little I get from the one i get of 3 litres (which I sell milk at 0.25 USD per litre a day) which is hardly enough to fend for my family and cater for my School going children.
