How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
If l could not have received the transfer my grandchild could have dropped out of school and this could have been a big problem. I could alss be still cooking in my two roomed house which was so squeezed, because l could not have manage to put up a kitchen, being that l do not have any stable income.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion give directly did well by using Empesa as a means of sending money because it is more convenient. It was also a good idea of not involving the authorities since we could not get the whole a mount as it was.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent most of the second transfer to pay school fee for my grandchild who was sent home for the arrears, when he was almost dropping out of school because of the arrears. I am very happy he is now back to school learning like other children without worrying of being sent home. I also spent most of the transfer to put up a kitchen, since l did not have spacious place to cook in l was using my main house and it also very squeezed because it is a two roomed house. I now have a very spacious place to cook in as compared to before when l was cooking in my main house. The remaining a mount l spent to buy and fix steel door and windows for the security purposes and the house is also looking more modern as compared to when it was wooden door and windows.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I was a casual labourer who mostly depended on farm jobs such as working on yam farms before I received this transfer. The yams are mostly grown in swampy areas which are also infested by leeches that feed on blood and transmit diseases. Working in those farms always caused me constant health problems that I could not even manage to treat due to low income. As soon as I received money from GD, I decided to put an end to such a terrible lifestyle and have a different source of income. I decided to start a small fish-selling business in the local market and I am so happy that I made that decision. The profits I make daily are almost triple what I would make in a day when I was working in the yam farms. God bless GD.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the message at around 3:20 am.I was not deep asleep so I woke up at the beep of the phone. I can't even describe how happy I felt seeing such an amount delivered to me on my phone just as was promised. I knelt down and thanked the Almighty God who I believe used GD to answer to my daily prayers of having a better life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
My house was in a very pathetic state before as I only had the foldable traditional chairs that were out-dated. I also never had a bed in my house which was quite an embarrassing factor for a person my age. I decided to give my house a face-lift by buying these items together with other household items using part of my transfer. I invested the rest of it on sugarcane farming and a small business that now earns me a daily income to sustain my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My ambition has been to become a commercial farmer. Receiving this money means my plans of hiring land, ploughing and planting sugar cane and arrow roots will be fulfilled. These two crops will sustain my food security status and also increase my income hence improved living conditions.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when washing utensils after taking supper . At this time I feel like my family have gotten their meals and are going to sleep comfortably.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in my life is lack of capital to invest in sugar cane and arrow roots farming. This could have supported my children's education once I sell the produce but since I did not do such investment my children had to drop out of Secondary school as I could not pay their fees. This has led to them being unskilled labor within the community and they can not realize their dreams.
