How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My biggest accomplishment would be to open a grocery. We take over two hours to get to a nearby shop just to buy simple items like bread and milk. I have the plan to open a grocery which would save the community the long trips in the morning, especially when they run out of household items. My budget would be, to begin with, $300 and with time increase the demand for specific items.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly given has done well through the provision of unconditional cash transfers. I am pleased to be enrolled in the program and grateful that you visited the village and imparted more about the organizations and followed up even after giving out the funds to understand how we spent the money. I would request that as you enroll more, it is very important to advise recipients on the expenditure of their funds and help them have a plan before getting the funds.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband is a motorcycle rider, and I am unemployed. We have four children in school. He bought a motorbike on credit and most of the funds have been used to clear the debt. My challenge has been educating my children and providing food. Recently, with my eldest daughter joining secondary school, it has been quite a challenge. My first transfer was used to buy building materials because the family wanted a bigger house, a two-roomed house with a verandah. Besides, the house was in a worse state and irreparable. The remaining cash bought food for the family and a bed and a mattress for my mother-in-law. The second transfer of $230 was used to pay the contractor and buy the remaining building materials to complete the structure. I paid the other $220 as school fees for the full term for my daughter, who joined the high school. The remaining money was used to buy food and other household items like washing detergents and cleaning items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
On this day, when I woke up, the first thing I did was check my phone and I saw a message that confirmed I had received funds from give directly. At first, I was in doubt. I thought that it was the con men. But when I confirmed my balance, I saw that it was true. immediately told my husband who was very happy for me. Since I had made plans of improving the house, we first bought the kids a 5 by 6 bed and a mattress.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
There has been a great difference in my life ever since I received the funds from give directly. I'm now building a two-roomed home with a veranda where my husband, my four children, and I will be living in. This is because the one-roomed one we currently live in is very squeezed. I also got to buy a 5 by 6 bed and a mattress for my children. Now they won't have to sleep on the floor.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am married with four children. We all live in a one-room house that has a veranda. My children also never had a bed. When I got the funds from give directly, my priority was to build a new home for us. One that had two rooms plus a veranda. So, I bought 26 iron sheets and 80 tree logs. Then I bought a 5 by 6 bed for the children. My firstborn was joining form one and since I had some amount remaining, I did some shopping for him.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have longed to build a house that will accommodate our family of four children, with all the plans I had I have not been able to achieve it. My husband is also the breadwinner of the family as I am jobless, he is also depended on by his parents leaving him with nothing to save on a house construction project. Receiving this money means I will immediately build a house for my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My mother in law gave me a phone as mine had some technical issues after falling in water. This made me feel loved and I became happy for that.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My husband is a solitary breadwinner in this family. He has to pay school fees for all school-going children, settle hospital bills as well as buy food for the family. This makes him being over depended on by the family.
