How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different from how it was in that, my business has grown after boosting it with part of the first and the second transfer which I got from GiveDirectly. The future is also bright for my children's education. I no longer strain like before because my income has since increased. I also have a few dairy cows and I can decide to sell milk so as to get money or even the young ones later in order to settle their high school fees.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong that I have seen this organization do. I love the fact that everyone is given an equal chance. No one was favored because of their status in the village. We didn't have to pay bribes to ensure that we were among the beneficiaries. The transparency and fairness was everything. Through them, many lives will be changed
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my transfer to purchase two heifers. I decided to invest in them because I had a few previously and I know how profitable they are. I have done several development moves as a result of the profits that I used to get from the cows that I had. In addition to that, I also bought two bags of maize. We didn't have a good harvest last season because of pests and diseases that compromised the quality and quantity of our crops. There is hope this time because we used more resistance seeds. I also bought clothes for my children and used the remaining amount to boost my cattle business.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I had two dairy cows and sometimes I could buy milk which was so costly for me. I depend on the casual jobs in the village and the amount of money I get is not enough to meet all the basic needs of the family and also to pay school fees for my children in primary school. Currently, I have enough milk for my family and the surplus I sell to earn an income to meet additional needs for the family. I also save some amount to pay school fees for my children and they are no longer sent home to collect school fees like before. I have also devoted half of my time on my own farm and this has enabled me to get a good harvest and we no longer buy food. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standardS.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received my first transfer because I had never received such amount of money before in my entire life. I remember it was very early in the morning when I heard a message from my phone. On checking the content of the message, it was a confirmation message from GiveDirectly that I had received a sum of 55000 KES. My family was so happy because we knew our plans would be accomplished. The following morning we budgeted with my spouse on how to spend the money and agreed on our lists of priority.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to buy a dairy cow. For a long time, we were forced to buy milk from the neighborhood something which had proven to be very costly and I had this desire of owning a dairy cow with an aim of reducing the cost of obtaining milk. This had not been possible owing to the little income that I got from my menial jobs. I used the remaining amount of money to buy a piece of land that could allow me to practice farming and I also used some to buy food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money will enable me buy three calves that will act as savings to be sold anytime whenever i need schoolfees for my children. I also intend to build an iron roofed kitchen since the one we have is grass thatched and leaks in water whenever it rains
What is the happiest part of your day?
My usual day entails waking up in the morning to ensure my livestock get enough feeds, after which i head to the garden to weed my nappier grass and some vegetables. I spend my afternoons looking for casual jobs in people's farms till evening when i get back home. Evening is the happiest part of my day since its time i get to rest after a long busy day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Crop pests and diseases has been a great challenge to us as a family. We no longer depend on farming like initially when it was our source of income after harvesting and selling the yields. Due to this, we have ended up struggling alot in terms of meeting our family needs. This is the biggest hardship we face
