How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different in that I have had positive change in my life. I used to rely mainly on casual labour to raise my family which is hard to come by sometimes. When I got the transfer I decided to be self employed by buying a motorcycle that has earned me extra income that has enabled me raise my family in a much more easy and better way. I have also been able to build a new and better house something I do not think I would have achieved anytime soon with my little income from my daily casual jobs. I will be forever indebted to GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly was so fair and not biased on anyone. They visited every household in the village and supported all the deserving households. The support they gave was timely and to the right people. On the other hand I felt they should have supported us more with an additional third transfer. Most of the people who received these transfers started projects that did not come to completion due to shortage of funds. Giving us a third transfer shall have helped in a great way to bring such dreams to reality.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used my second transfer to buy a motorcycle worth KES 35000 and used the remaining amount to buy building materials for completion of my house. I am so passionate about transport sector since it gives me some income at the end of the day. When I got these transfers, I decided to buy a motorcycle and it has greatly assisted me and my family. I pay school fees, feed the family and even save some little amount at the end of the day. As for the house, I decided to build a new and bigger house that could make me more comfortable when I am at home and even welcome visitors. We had one house that served as a kitchen and in which we slept in as a whole family. This was so uncomfortable for me and my family. My children can now read comfortably in the new house as cooking goes on in the kitchen. I also have the confidence of welcoming visitors at my home unlike in the past when I could feel ashamed to have them at home.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Two years ago I suffered from arthritis. This disease came at a time when my children were very young.I had to get support from friends and family to feed my children since I could not work.I also spent the little I had to seek medication which I later got through herbal medicine. This was the biggest hardship I have faced in life that still lingers in my mind.
