How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I did not have a new goal I had planned on purchasing a piece of land. This is because we lived on a small piece of land and I had always wished to own a bigger piece of land to do horticulture farming. I am so grateful because I have bought the farm and am ready to start the farming project.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Giving money to the poor in the community is what GiveDirectly does well. Most of the people were able to meet their needs and some invested the money in businesses. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 50,000 on purchasing a piece of land from my neighbor. We lived on a small piece of land before and this was limiting us from engaging in farming. I had a passion for doing horticulture farming but the land was so small. I had always wished to own a bigger piece of land but I did not have the money to buy it. Currently, I have a piece of land and I wish to do horticulture. Due to my old age, I will just direct my children on how and when they do that for me. I am so grateful because I know I will get enough food for the family and even sell the surplus at the market to earn an income to meet other additional basic household needs. I spent the rest of the money on food for the family and household items. I am so grateful for the support because were it not GiveDirectly all this could not have happened.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was early in the morning after waking up and needed to charge my phone in my son's house since my house is not connected to electricity yet. On giving out my phone to my son, he noticed that there was a message that had just popped up. He had to read it first before switching the phone off. It was the great news from GiveDirectly that sent us celebrating and could not even charge my phone again for the next two hours. I was thankful that the hopes I had been keeping were finally bearing fruits. With my spouse at home that morning, we planned on withdrawing and later send my helper who managed to withdraw and come back home that afternoon.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Even though I obtained a heifer that has not started producing milk yet, I had been feeling grateful that I was able to own livestock at last after rearing a neighbor's one for a long time. I am glad that my husband was of the same idea, and this has brought the biggest difference in my life as I am now hopeful that I will see it grow to give us additional liters of milk soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After a discussion with my spouse, we spent KES20000 of our first transfer on obtaining a heifer as we had been dependent on the neighbor's cow that we had been keeping for almost a year now. We had been hoping to start introducing ours as a security in case the neighbors' will be taken back. We also considered obtaining additional foodstuff as the previous harvest was slowly draining on our stores and saved all the remaining amount with the plan of constructing a new house to replace the old hut that we had been dependent on as a kitchen and a living room at the same time. We are now looking forward to the second transfer that we will add to the savings we were left with to facilitate the purchase of the construction materials and the construction work.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I can now improve my home. I live in a dilapidated grass-thatched hut. additionally, it is too big for us, since it was built when I still had a large family when my kids were growing up. It is more than 30 years old! It leaks whenever it rains. When I receive the cash, I will spend about KES 50,000 to build two houses made of iron sheets with smaller rooms. I will then spend the remaining amount on buying furniture for us.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the afternoon. This is mainly because take it as leisure time since I don't work with my children on the farms. I only oversee them. It makes me happy watching them work hard to provide for us.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the biggest hardship that I face. My old age has prevented me from working on the farm to grow crops. In order to solve this, I will buy a dairy cow. Selling milk from it to buy foodstuffs. My aim is to be producing milk that will give me about KES 160 per day. It will be sufficient given that I only have my husband and some grandchildren who do not fully rely on me.
