How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Our new goal is to buy more land and build another house that is made of timber planks. We would like to buy more land so that we can have more space for rearing our cows. We also would like to build another house because the one that we are living in it at the moment is made of mud. Getting good mud for mudding the house has become quite a challenge since it is no longer easily available like before. We hence usually buy some. Achieving the above will not be easy since we do not have the large sum of money that is needed to do so. I usually depend on the sale of milk from my cow to earn a living. The money from the sake usually help me in buying food and household items such as sugar, soap, etc. My husband on the other end is employed as a supervisor in a certain school. The money that he makes usually goes to the payment of school fees for our two children.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did well because they uplifted our living standards with the transfers that they sent us. Life was hard before then and we didn't have a lot of things. Their staff was friendly and they taught us well in the meeting that they held with the community members. We got to learn a lot about the program and that it is not affiliated with the government or any political party. They were also not biased in their enrollment since they enrolled everyone who was meeting the criteria. No one paid any bribe for them to be enrolled. I thus do not see anything that went wrong that I would advise them to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 40000 of our recent transfer on buying another cow. We decided to buy the cow to add to the one that we had so that when one cow is dry, the other one is there to supply us with milk. I usually sell some milk from our cow where I usually supply 3 liters to a nearby milk cooling plant and I get paid at the end of the month. The money from the sales helps me in buying food and household essentials such as sugar, soap, etc. This way I get to help my husband in meeting some of the costs and he hence can concentrate on payment of school fees for the children. With the remaining transfer amount, we spent it on buying food and clothes for the children. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for your help.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
We were about our daily activities with my husband and at that particular time we were feeding our livestock. One of our immediate neighbours came calling the name of my husband and told him that she had received her transfer. My husband then shared the good news with me and on checking our phone, we had indeed received money from GiveDirectly. We felt so happy and for a while we were in a celebration mood. We revisited our plans and made a decision to spend the transfer almost immediately. The next day we went to the market and bought a 5000 litre water tank.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference is in the water tank that we bought after receiving our first transfer. The tank has brought so much relief to us as a family. We no longer take long hours going to the river and there is no more risk of contracting water borne diseases. We have enough water in the tank currently and this has brought so much peace in our home. We look forward to making much more investments.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 35000 to buy a water tank. The decision to buy a water tank was as a result of us traveling for long distance each day to fetch water from the rivers. This was not only tiresome but also time consuming. Each and every day my children and I would have to wake up at 5 am and go to the river to fetch water. This was a great security threat to us and I personally looked forward to the day we could get enough money to buy a tank and be able to harvest rain water. Today as we speak, the tank is full and I am at peace. I have clean drinking water and my children have ample time to do their homework and hope for better performance. The remaining amount of money was used to buy clothes for aour children and food for family

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Business has been my passion. I have always wanted to start a kiosk in the nearby center. When I heard about Givedirectly my heart was filled with joy because I knew my long-time dream will be fulfilled. When I get this transfer I will use it in paying rent and purchasing stock. I will start with a capital of KES 20000.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the afternoon. This is the time I get to rest after running up and down the hearding cows. I also get to spend time with my son when he returns from school.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship has been a lack of capital. I mostly depend on farming, but our area is prone to drought. The little we get from the farm I use for household needs. I used to depend on chicken for sale but recently died due to diseases.
