How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I would like to start a business selling vegetables at the market. Buy them in Kilifi and sell them in Bamba. Right now I am the provider in the family and having extra money can save me a lot with the house bills.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly has helped out, as a widow getting support goes a long way. I have a house where I can comfortably take care of my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a widow, my husband died seven years ago and left me with nine children. I work in a restaurant where I cook pastries and tea. I am paid $2.5 a day which I spend on food for the family. I also do a side hustle where I produce charcoal and my son sells it at $4 a sack. This money helps pay for my six children who are in school. Four are in primary school where I pay $1.5 a month and two are in secondary school paying $60 a term. Ever since my husband died I have never repaired my house and it was collapsing. I spent the recent transfer to build a new house which cost $450 and bought a mattress at $50 and used the rest on food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received the message notifications at around 9 pm when was about to go to bed after taking dinner. I had to wait until the next day for the helper to check and interpret the information on the phone since I am illiterate. I was very curious about the messages since it was within those dates when we were expecting the transfer to be sent. I woke up very early that morning and went to the helper's house. I felt very happy after being told I had received the transfer from GiveDireclty. We decided to go straight to withdraw the transfer because I had already planned for it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Residing in a decent shelter after putting up a new roof to my house is the biggest difference in daily life. Previously, I had to spent sleepless nights during the rain period. Moreover, I was able to starting poultry farming an alternative source of income for the family. Initially, I was depending on crop farming which had been greatly affected by the drought condition that has prevailed in our area for over 2 years now.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My desire was to start poultry faming as a reliable source of income for the family. This is because I had the experience in raising them. After receiving the transfer, I spent most of it to built a structure and purchased 25 chicken and their feeds. I am positive that would make so much profit from this venture since I already have ready market of them. Furthermore, I used the remaining amount to renovating my house by putting up a new iron roof. The one we had earlier was leaking due to the old and rusty iron sheets. I bought 46 iron sheets, timbers and nails and a construction costs of KES 9,000. Currently, I happy that I reside in decent house courtesy of the aid from GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My roof was devoured by termites, it is weak and anytime the winds blow I speculate it can be swept away. I feel insecure resting in that house because it can collapse anytime. Receiving this money means comfort to me, I intend to renovate my roof with new timber and iron sheets. I will build concrete pillars to support my roof. This will bring back the honor I lost because my house was unstable. I will buy ten goats to nourish as a future investment. With the remaining amount, I will save them for any emergency I can be able to deal with it.
What is the happiest part of your day?
One of my five children had traveled abroad to work and we had not seen each other for two years. In January she gave me a surprise visit. This brought joy to my life meeting her again after that long period while safe and sound.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My legs and eyes are currently the problems I encounter. I can not work for long distances and this has affected me to stay in my compound all time. I can not stay in direct sunlight for a long time so mostly I stay indoors. All money sent by my children is used for my medical care. I use 600 KES for transport to the hospital and 1500 KES for my medical bill. I pray to God that one day I can be well and never spend my money paying hospital bills.
