How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next one year and beyond, I hope that I will get some casual work that will enable me do more business. Right now, I still depend on odd casual jobs to put food on the table for my family. I am also a widow which means that everyone in the family looks up to me to meet the needs of family. Once the rains fall, I will be able to start a grocery business that will be quite profitable and that will make my family's living standards to rise. I am to this far very grateful to GiveDirectly for the support.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving support in form of cash. This gave me an opportunity to spend the money in the ways I felt most comfortable with. Looking at the two houses that I was able to build and the dairy cow that I bought too makes me so much happy as a person who has no one else to look up to for support. The amount of happiness exhibited by my children is just overwhelming and I am so happy about it. I can only look forward towards making more improvements for my family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my first transfer, I was able to build a main house for my family. Having built a main house, I saw the need to build a kitchen house for my family once I received my second transfer. We had for a long time lived in a single grass thatched house that had its roof leaking. I had not enough money to be able to do this since I normally rely on odd casual jobs to make some income that helps me support my family. I make hardly $2 per day that may be just enough to make ends meet and nothing to save for such huge projects. I am so happy that with this transfers, I have been able to build both houses and made my life and that of my children better. I used $150 to build the kitchen and the remaining amount was used to buy a dairy cow. These investments have greatly changed my life and I can only look forward to doing more business with the savings that I am going to make from m y casual work. I am more concerned about starting a grocery business that will help me meet the needs of my family quite easily.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was 6 am and I had just woken up when I thought of checking on my phone if there were any missed calls or new messages. I reached out for it and upon activating my phone screen, I saw an M-pesa SMS. With lots of excitement, I hurriedly checked the contents of the SMS since I had heard that some people had already received the transfers from GiveDirectly the previous evening. I had hence been eagerly waiting for them. I was so happy when I saw that indeed it was the SMS saying that I had also received the promised transfer of KES 55000. I guessed the SMS must have gotten into my phone the previous night when I was already asleep. Just then as I was still mesmerizing about how the money was going to be of great help to me, my sister-in-law came in asking if I had also received the wonderful news just like her. I confirmed to her that I had also received it. We celebrated together giving thanks to God for the blessing.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer brought a very big difference in my life and that of my family. I now live in a nice house which I had for a long time desired to build but due to financial constraints, I was not in a position to. May God bless you so much GiveDirectly. for the gift.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the whole of the transfer money on building another house. This is what I had always wanted the most for a long time since the house that I used to live in had grown old and it was grass-thatched. Getting grass for roofing had become quite a challenge to me since they are no longer easily available in the fields. I was not able to construct another house since I didn't have a large sum of money that is needed to do so. I am a small scale farmer and I also usually do casual jobs of farming to make a living. The little money that I usually get from engaging in the income-generating activities most of it usually goes to the purchase of food and other household necessities. I am so thankful to GiveDirectly because I now have a nice house that is roofed with iron sheets and hence I no longer have to endue looking for grass.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This help came at a perfect time. My house seeps water and also leaks from the roof. It is so dilapidated and old. Also, it is uncomfortable especially during rainy season because it can be very cold.Receiving this money, therefore, will enable me to build a better house. I intend to build an iron sheet roof house. This will cost me approximately KES 40000. I will use the rest of the money to buy a cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When give directly came to our village, I have been so happy since then. This is because I am so certain my will change for the better. This was the best news I had not heard for sometime. Thank you Give Directly.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am so lonely at the moment. My husband passed recently, and I am barren. I did not get any child despite several attempts. At the moment I stay alone and it is really a big deal for me.
