How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
As a strong believer in the profitability that can come from livestock farming, I have a new goal to add another dairy cow to my herd to increase milk production that will, in turn, increase the income after the sale. The livestock project has been the main source of school fees in the household that has seen my three children through primary school and now doing great in their secondary schools. At the moment I am a casual laborer, farmer, and also running a small business that I believe will be an avenue in raising an adequate amount that can buy a good breed in the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Construction of a new house and payment of school fees for my three children would not have been possible were it not for the support from GiveDirectly. It felt great that we were given this support in monetary value that enable us to make personal decisions that influenced our living standards. In my opinion, the approach by GiveDirectly was an amazing one as everyone embraced without a question.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It has been a gamble raising school fees for my two daughters and a son in secondary school since I have never been on payroll or run any promising business that can constantly earn me some income. I was glad to receive the transfers that cleared the school fees for all my children after paying a total of KES 28000. I can now do the small-scale farming, small business, and the casual labors that I had been depending on as I make smaller savings that will help in payment of the coming terms. I also constructed a new house with the remaining KES 25000 for my son who has always been seeking a place to sleep in the neighborhood. He now enjoys his evening studies at the comfort of his room - a step that I believe will improve his performance in school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At the moment I received the transfer, I felt good as I had been anticipating the great day as I was given the possible dates to receive by the officer who visited my household. On receiving the notification message, I was so excited to open it up, read it with confidence when I realized that it was bearing the good news, and thanked God for the fulfilled promise byGiveDirectly. I was alone in my household that morning as my children were still in school. I had to celebrate this alone in the house hoping that we would have all been home as my children would have shared the moment too.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Having my construction of a new house completed is so far the biggest difference in my daily life. My children are enjoying the spacious reading space and later sleeping in a clean room, unlike the old kitchen that had been so squeezed up and not well maintained. I am grateful and still hopeful that I will accomplish a lot with the next transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a single mother of three, and schooling at the same time, life has never been that easy as I have had to raise my children on my own. I had been hoping to put up a new construction for my household as I had been living in a small hut that was both a kitchen and a living room. This had been inconveniencing my children a lot as they could neither read nor complete their assignment every evening due to the disturbing smoke from the kitchen. On receiving the first transfer, I saw an opportunity to construct a new house. I obtained 20 iron sheets, building posts, and paid the labor force at a total cost of KES 40000. I am glad that it is now complete and my children can enjoy their evening studies and a spacious room to sleep after. I also managed to obtain a goat that I am currently rearing with a plan to sell it out in the future in case of any financial need. With the remaining amount, I bought enough foodstuff for the household with KES 3000 and also clothing for my children who needed a ner pair each.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Owning a bigger house has always been my desire. I am a widow and the breadwinner of my household. I currently live in a small grass thatched house with my 2 children ,with the other teenage boy borrowing sleep from the neighbours. Receiving this money means building a decent house (300usd)to accommodate my family. I will spend the remaining transfers on food, clothing and purchasing a dairy cow(300usd).The milk will be used by the household and the remainder sold for income(0.35usd) per litre.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Being a widow and the bread winner , I have to work extra hard on my farm to produce food for my family. I am happy in the morning because I am energetic enough to till the land and look after the cattle. The income I earn from farming is enough to sustain my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Imagine your son being a sleep borrower, traumatizing, isn't it! I am a widow who solely depend on subsistence farming. With the climatic changes , the farm cannot produce enough to feed the family and earn extra income to build a decent shelter. This has been my biggest hardship.
