How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal is to buy 3 acres piece of land and construct modern rental houses on it. This shall cost me around kshs 300,000. By next year at a time like this I want to be already receiving rent money from the rental houses. I'm planning all these to secure the future of my children. I can later buy more livestock just to expand.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly has changed people's lives in this village. It has eradicated poverty. It has helped people to build iron sheets-roofed houses. The whole village is happy about Give Directly. You have transfers to every house hold other than per compound. This was great since it avoided conflicts that could have arised among different house holds that live in the same compound. May you continue helping other needy people every where you go. I don't see any where that you should improve.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought a cow worth kshs 15,000. This is because all my 4 children really love milk. So I prefer to have the cow than to be buy milk. Incase of excess milk, I can also sell some. My 2 children had a school fees balance of kshs 10,000 and so, I cleared it. My house needed repair. I bought 7 bags of cement @ kshs 700. I bought sand worth kshs 2,000 ,floor tiles worth kshs 3,400 and paid kshs 3,000 for labour. My husband is a casual worker and recently he has not been lucky to be called for any job. So I was the one buying food mostly but in small portions. I would buy maize flour, vegetables and water using this money. Approximately, I spent kshs 16,800 on food.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. It was around 6:00 am and I woke up my husband who equally was so happy about the transfer. Initially we had been skeptical about the cash but when the message came and reality downed on us, we could not believe our eyes. I felt so happy to have received the money from GiveDirectly and I could not thank God enough as at that time. We later on agreed on what we needed to do and put our plans together with so much ease.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The fact that we have been able to improve our house from a mud walled structure with earth floor is something that I feel so much happy of and proud of it too. This is something I have always wanted to do to make our home more comfortable and place that all family members look forward to going. This to me is the biggest difference in my life after receiving the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We used KES 26000 to improve our house from that of a mud wall and earth floor to a cemented floor and plastered walls. Our home is now more permanent and more comfortable for us as a family. For a long time I had had the desire to put up a better structure but the kind of casual work that we engaged in would not allow us to improve the one that we had yet. We are so happy and very grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling us do this with the transfers that we received. We used another KES 10000 to buy a dairy cow. It is an investment that is so viable in my area at the moment and is meant to help us meet other emerging needs in future. We also got to pay school fees balances for one of my children amounting to KES 5000 while the remaining amount was used to buy food for family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My three children always want milk and I also have been having plans to buy a resistant dairy cow though all my plans have been fruitless. Receiving this money means I will use 20,000 KES to buy the dairy cow. I will use 2 litres for family consumption and sell the rest as I am also jobless, selling the milk will be like a job I have created for myself. The money I get from selling the milk I will use it to take care of my daily family expenses.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My celebration for the new year was fabulous. All my children had new clothes and we slaughtered a he-goat as a way of thanking God for his generous mercies for my family. This brought a lot of joy and happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being jobless I always have to depend on my husband for everything. My husband's salary is little and this makes us at times fail to put food on the table. I also struggle to pay school fees for my children.
