How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I plan to expand my wife's business, it has the potential of making enough profits for us. My other goal is to buy a motorbike that I plan to rent it out and be getting $4 a day.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
They have a toll-free number that whenever I call, I can reach the organization. They are polite and talking to them always feels therapeutic.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before receiving the transfer, I had no job. The most casual job I would get is in masonry and I would get $5 a day. My passion was to start a business that would enable me to cater to my family's needs. With two children the money was not enough and most days we would sleep hungry. Receiving this transfer has helped me buy a motorbike that makes $50 a month, and opened up a retail shop for my wife which makes $150 a month. The money from the two businesses has helped us buy food and pay school fees for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can vividly remember just like the other day at around 8 AM when i was at the shop buying foodstuff for the day when i heard a message tone. Without wasting time, I opted to check the content of the message. Upon checking I realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectcly, they had debited my first transfers as promissed. Due to the joy that I had, I even deiced to return home and started the planning.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I now own a motorcycle. This has been my long-time dream to at least have my own but because of the low income, I couldn't afford it. Initially, I was employed by one of my friends and I used to be paid on commission. On a good day, I could earn $6 which was very little as per my family's needs. Being the family breadwinner it was hectic because most of the days I could fail to fulfill the family's basic needs like food. Therefore since I had the experience in operating the bodaboda business I settled for it. I am now glad to say ever since I started this business I have been getting good returns and on a good day, I normally make $15.I am currently in a position to take good care of my family without straining like before. I plan to save part of the profit and even open some other lucrative businesses like retail shops which I believe will be an additional income.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a huge fraction of my first transfer on buying a motorcycle at $300. This had been my dream to purchase it for so many years but because of the poverty life that had stricken my household, I couldn't afford it a. Also I bought five goats worthy of $175. I later bought few pieces of iron sheets, timber, nails, cement and sand purposely for the renovation of my house since it was not in a good state. During the rainy seasons, it could leak excessively and we had to seek shelter from friends. On top of that, I gave the mason $56.5 as his labor charge.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I work as a taxi driver in our nearby village. Despite being employed, I have not managed to construct a good house for my family because the wages are not enough to sustain all our needs. Currently, we are staying in a small structure that is not spacious. I am planning to spend 60,000 Kenya shillings to set up a semipermanent house in which we can leave comfortable. Other than that, I will use the remaining amount to purchase 10 goats with a view of selling them in the future when they multiply. This is going to generate income for us.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Evening is my happiest part of the day. This is the time I go back home after a long day and meet my wife so that we discuss what we have earned and plan for tomorrow. Contrary to morning when everyone is moving out.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a reliable source of income is my biggest hardship. I work as a taxi driver. This job earns me 300 shillings in a day but it is not guaranteed because sometimes the taxi breaks down forcing me not to work. Due to this reason,I have not managed to fulfill all our needs such as shelter.
