How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My initial goal was to spend my transfer on paying school fees for my 5 children. Since I do not have a reliable source of income, I have been struggling not only to raise their fees but also to buy for them food. Once I managed to offset the accumulated school fee arears, I developed a new goal of keeping goats. The additional goal of raising goats will be great reward when they reproduce. Income from the sale of goats will help me to support my children's education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Since GiveDirectly began to work in my area, I have witnessed it doing well in supporting our community financially. This has easen our burden hence we have not struggled much in raising fees as well as getting food for our family during the prolonged drought. Personally, I have began raising goats, a goal that I did not have at first courtesy of GiveDirectly's transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 20,000 from my most recent transfer to build a new small and descent house for my children. I have three grown up children who currently cannot spend in my house according to our cultural beliefs. They will therefore be using that new house instead of going to spend in the neighbourhood. Through this, they will be having ample time to study at night. I also spent KES 10,500 to buy 3 goats in order to initiate my dream of raising livestock. The rest of the transfer helped me to obtain food for my family members.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt very happy when I got the money because I had gotten something that was going to help me address the challenges I was facing, especially settling my children's school fees arrears, which had me stranded and didn't know what to do about them. It was a moment of pure joy and gratitude, when I received the money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I've been so unhappy before receiving payments from GiveDirectly, especially, due to my children being sent home for school fees arrears and I was unable to do any substantial thing about it. However, ever since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly, that has changed. My children are now in school, I have goats that I would sell to get school fees in the future which means I am no longer worried about my children's education. I am so happy and grateful. Thanks to GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer on settling my six children's school fees arrears, whom three are in primary school, two in secondary school and one in college. I spent a total of KES31000 on education for my children because I owed the various schools a lot and I had no means of my own. Therefore, when I got this assistance from GiveDirectly, I made sure my children go back to school because they are what the future holds and with their good education I will also be able to count and depend on them since I believe they will be employed. I also bought three goats at a total cost of KES10500 because goats and livestock in general are an investment in our area but I prefer goats to cows because the former are able to persevere in this dry climate of our area. These goats, I know, will multiply and increase in numbers which means that I will be able to sell one or two to address the financial challenges I will face in the future. I am so happy and grateful to GiveDirectly.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My daughter is in college doing a diploma in office practice and management and was sent home because of school fees. Receiving this money means my daughter will continue with her learning and I believe if my daughter finishes her career, will help me in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the evening after I have completed my daily work of charcoal business.I am happy in this time because I am through with my daily chores and enjoying my super with my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My children are being sent home from school every now and then because of luck of school fees. My husband is vending water in Mombasa but the amount of money he gets from this business cannot sustain my household's. If I will settle this problem of my children's school fees, then I will be relieved because this is the biggest hardship I am facing in my life.
