How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next one year I am working towards getting a stable source of income where I will not struggle to put food on the table for my family as well as pay school fees for my children. With the small piece of land that I used to till, life was a little difficult for us as a family as we could not get even enough to put food on the table sometimes. With my husband still in school, it has been a struggle but with the support that I received from my GiveDirectly, I hope things will change soon. I plan to raise more money through farming and invest this money in other small businesses that will see me and my family move towards being financial stability. My husband too shall be done with his studies by end of this year and we are looking forward towards helping one another do this. The future of our children shall be more secure with them getting the best in terms of education.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does very well by enrolling without any form of discrimination whatsoever. The officers sent by GiveDirectly are so keen to ensure that no one is left unattended to. They do this with a lot of care and precision and with top notch customer care skills. Giving cash as a form of aid is another good thing about GiveDirectly. It is worth noting that people have different needs and different priorities and seeing GiveDirectly respect this is just so good. The change that I now see in my village, the happiness in people's faces is just priceless. I do not find anything wrong with how they conduct their operations, everything is just perfect about them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used $200 to lease, till and put a piece of land under agricuture. I used another $230 to buy a heifer that is almost calving. Another $80 was used to pay school fees for my children who are still in their primary level of education. The remaining amount helped us to purchase basic household commodities such as food. I made a decision to lease a piece of land since we only live in a very small piece that does not allow us practice commercial agricuture. I leased 2 acres of land and have already planted maize in it awaiting a harvest. I am a mother of five children and my husband is still studying in school making me the sole provider in the family as at now. With my teaching job, I can earn just a little that is hardly enough to sustain the needs of my family. It is for this reason that I thought of expanding my agricultural activities with this transfers with an aim of increasing my income and bettering our living standards as a family. Once the cow that we bought starts producing milk, it will also make my life and that of my family quite easy.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 Pm when I was in bed ready to speak when I heard a message notification from my phone. When I checked it out I could not believe my eyes it was a message confirming that I have received money from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy because I have never received such an amount of money before. It was one of the happiest nights I have ever had. In the morning I informed my children and we all celebrated. I knew I would be able to buy the building materials and build a better and more spacious house for my family. We aligned with my family members and went to withdraw the money after three days.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is building a better and more spacious house for my family. This is because we lived in one small house which could not host all my family members comfortably. I had always wanted to build a better and more spacious house but I did not have the money. I depend on small-scale farming whereby I plant maize and beans. This is majorly for consumption there was no extra produce to sell. I am a teacher and my salary is so small it could not sustain us. It is just for household basic needs and other emergencies. I was so stressed whenever we had visitors since there was no space to host them. When I received the transfer from Give directly I felt so happy because this was the opportunity to invest. I was able to buy all the materials that were needed and pay the workers. Currently, I live in a better and more spacious house and we are so grateful because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard much better. GiveDirectly has fulfilled my dream of owning a good. Were it not GiveDirectly all this could have taken quite some time to be accomplished.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 30,000 on building a better and more spacious house for my family. We lived in a small house that could not host all my comfortably. I have always wished to own a better house but this was not possible since I did not have the money to buy the building materials. Currently, we live in a better and more spacious house and we are so grateful for the support. I spent KES 5,000 on paying school fees for my children in various schools. They used to be sent home and this was affecting their performance. Besides that, I spent KES 7,000 on renting a piece of land ready to plant maize and beans. I will be able to get enough produce to feed my family and sell the surplus to earn an income. The remaining amount of money I spent on food and household items.
