How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, life is better than it was because the transfers have helped me to boost my business. I have been able to generate more income from the business and life is easy and better than before. By building a new house for my mother in law, I have also earned some respect among my in-laws. She currently lives in a more spacious and comfortable house compared to the one she had at first.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well in supporting the neediest people in society through financial support. This has greatly improved the lives of the recipients who were enrolled in the program because they have been able to accomplish their goals. However, in my opinion, I have not seen anything that GiveDirectly does not do well.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer on buying 20 plastic chairs which I currently use in my restaurant and bar business. In addition, I used part of it to buy 3 goats which my family gladly keeps. The presence of our goats keeps on reminding me of the act of kindness that we were shown by GiveDirectly since all through my life I had never received such a big financial support. I spent the rest of the transfer on buying 40 iron sheets for completing the roofing for my mother-in-law's house. Through this, the relationship between my mother-in-law and I, is good and she has loved me more than before.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
We were almost giving up because we had little cash to renovate our hotel according to the standard we heard in mind. As a result of Give Directly transfer, I am very grateful we managed to buy tiles and paint that we used to renovate it to the standard we wanted it to be. It now looks very neat, decent and attractive to many customers after we managed to renovate it in a more decent way to the surprise of many customers. This has increased the number of customers hence increase in my daily sale. Our living standards have improved in that we are eating a balanced diet and my children are now putting on decent clothes. This is the biggest difference in my daily life.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 3 am and I was already awake because my newborn baby was unwell, I heard my phone beep thrice and I got interested to check my phone. I confirmed it was a message from GD that I have received Kes 55000. I was very excited and woke up my husband to come and see for himself. He woke up immediately but at the back of his mind, he thought something was wrong, I gave him the phone and told him kindly check the message from GD. He was very happy too and thanked God because we were going to renovate our hotel which was our dream since that has been the source of our livelihood. We both woke and made stories till morning. Then he went to the mpesa agent very early in the morning to withdraw the money and later came back after buying tiles and paint for renovating our hotel.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I had started renovating my business premise(hotel) with the little personal saving from my business because the floor had cracks and walls were also looking too old hence not attracting many customers leading to low daily income. When I received this amount of money I bought tiles that I used to renovate the floor because I wanted it to look smart, decent and attractive to many customers and paints that I used to paint the walls. This was going to increase the number of customers hence increase in daily sales thus an improvement in my living standards. In addition, I was going to support my family with a lot of ease and even going to pay school fees for my children promptly. I also bought two female goats for rearing because they multiply fast and I could sell some to help me in future whenever I have any financial crisis. Not forgetting a deep freezer for storing food to avoid spoilage and wastage of food at my hotel business.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I will be able to buy iron sheets so that we build a house for my grandmother and the remaining amount will be spent on buying more stock for our grocery business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning when I go to my farm to plough kales. This makes me proud because it suppliements our income.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I face in my life is that our business is unstable and at times we are not able to get cash at the end of the day for our upkeep.
