How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My next goal is for me to be able to purchase a parcel of land in future, I am hopeful because I was able to revive my business with the transfer that I had received from GiveDirectly, I would be able to save up some money from the business to accomplish my new goal, all in all, I am grateful for the support that impacted my life wonderfully.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We are grateful for the support that gave us an opportunity for us to uplift our lives regardless of our social status, I was able to revive my business, I have seen my village mate build houses, others bought cattle. I have not witnessed anything that was not done well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My business had collapsed before, this was because I had used the money in purchasing a parcel of land, I was then left to depend on casual jobs for livelihood, Upon receiving my transfer, my priority was for me to revive my business which had collapsed, thus I used KES 50,000 in reviving the business, I then used the remaining amount in buying foodstuffs and clothes, I was unable to revive the business back due to unreliable sources of income, I am now hopeful that with the business running I would be able to cater for my needs. I am grateful for the support that empowered me financially.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9am while on transit to a funeral when I heard my phone ring and on checking it was KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy and immediately resort to withdraw the money in the nearest town when we alighted.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is happiness because through the transfers my cattle selling business which was dead is now revived. This means I am able to cater for my family well because there's a daily income from this business. The transfers have also relieved of the stress of losing my son a few months earlier before GiveDirectly came to our village.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer as capital for to revive my cattle selling business because I had stopped doing the business a few months ago due to lack of money. I also bought heifer worth KES15,000 for my family as an investment for future because I had lost all of my cows to a cattle disease a few years back. The rest was spent on school fees, clothing and food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have 1.5 acres of land only yet I have six children who shall inherit the land. As aspiring subsistence farmers, the land is inadequate when subdivided amongst them. So, receiving this money says a larger piece of land for each of my children. I will use about KES 80000 on expanding our farm by 0.25 acres. Overall, this money signifies a better future for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
After losing both my father and son the same month, we had a fruitful fundraiser. We collected about KES 68000. We paid off all debts (approximately KES 45000) that had accumulated during such times. Also, I used KES 20000 of the remaining amount on restarting my business of livestock trade. In brief, the fund drive drew some happiness in my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We lost our second-born child (through suicide) about two months ago. Besides, I lost my father (through terminal ailment) the same month. As a result, are feeling lonely and the gaps left by the two persons are yet to be filled. Also, we are yet to understand what made our son commit suicide. In brief, we are still mourning the loss of our family members.
