How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is now different because I have my own semi-permanent house. I was married for over 20 yrs I have been sleeping under small huts which were temporary with some grass-thatched roofing. All through the roof has been leaking and was always giving me some sleepless nights. Secondly, I had to change the grass roofing yearly, this was costly according to my financial status. I am happy because my family and I are now sleeping under a permanent spacious iron-roofed house. I no longer worry about the heavy downpours or even the wild animals that were sometimes attacking us. If it were not for GiveDirectly coming to my village I don't think if I would have achieved all this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly has done everything so well in my village. This is because the money was sent directly to my mobile phone and granted freedom in choosing to do what I have been wishing to own. I feel this is the best area that Givedirectly did to me. Compared to the previous organizations I was only given some foodstuffs which after two days I had finished everything. Buf with Giving directly, I have even build my own house which I never thought would happen anytime soon. The GiveDirectly officers were also kind-hearted and very social. I interacted with them freely and helped me whenever I could ask. Due to that, I didn't see any part thus organization failed us.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some building materials such as building poles at KES 15000, and some nails at KES 5000. This was for the purpose of constructing a house that I had previously started using my first transfer. I then paid the Masson at KES 7500 as his labor fees. I then paid school fees for my children who are in secondary and primary school. I then bought two goats in KES 5000. This was what I had desired to keep in my compound but I could not afford it. The remaining amount of money, I bought some foodstuffs for my family,

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The transfer has enabled me to purchase enough building materials for constructing my new house. I recently bought iron sheets and building poles. I have been living in an old hut which was not safe at all. It was even worse during the heavy rains because it would soak everything hence forcing us to seek shelter from our neighbors. Though my hope was to upgrade to a better house, I did not have adequate resources to accomplish this. When I received transfers from GiveDireclty, I was now able to build a decent iron-roofed house. To me, this is the biggest dream I have ever met. I can't believe I will never bear the shame of asking for shelter during winter. Give Directly has really saved me and I can't thank them enough.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I received money on my phone early that morning. On checking to confirm how much it was, I was surprised to notice it was so much. At first, I thought it was one of my children who had remembered me and sent me something. When I saw the amount, I was perplexed since I have never received such a huge amount before. I knew I could now do the projects that had been pending for a long time since I started doing them.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent KES 31000 of my first transfer on buying building materials. I bought 36 pieces of iron sheets, nails, timber and building poles in order to construct a new house. I was previously living in a small hut that was leaking during rainy seasons. I feel good because my hope of living in a better house has finally been fulfilled by the support from GiveDirectly. I am now in the process of constructing a new house and I can't contain my joy. In addition to that, I also spent KES 15000 to pay for my son's school fees. I also took KES 4000 to pay for labor to the farmers who helped me plough my farm. I used the remaining amount to buy a few households items and food that would last as for a while.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
A decent house for my family is what receiving this money means to me. Currently, I am living in a small, leaking grass-thatched house that cannot accommodate my family especially at this time when it is raining. This has forced some of my children to seek alternative shelter from a neighbor something that subject me to humiliation. My first priority goes to an iron roofed and spacious house when I receive my transfers and this will restore the joy that I have lost for long.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The evening is the happiest part of my day because I get enough time to relax after a busy day of collecting my firewood for sale.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Failure to meet my inner desire to own a better house due to lack of a reliable source of income has been my greatest challenge in life. This has forced me to live a miserable life because my job of selling firewood earn me little income. Since my earning is low, providing my family with food is a problem not mentioning building a better house.
