How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been if I never received the transfers in that I have bought a bedding, sofa set seats and utensils. I do small scale farming and casual jobs in the village and sometimes to get this jobs is so hard. I rarely had the money to buy the household items. I used to sleep on the floor I did not had the bed, I didn't had a seats I used to sit on the floor. I didn't had the blankets and mattress. My living standard was so poor. When I received the second transfer I found it Worth to invest on this amazing basic needs. I purchased the bedding and utensils. I now sleep soundly without being worried of the cold. I always wake up early feeling so fresh to conduct my daily routine work. Whenever I have visitors in my house I no longer shy to welcome them because I have seats and tables and a spacious house. I am so happy because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard to be much better than before.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly does well by giving money to the poor in the community to build better houses and to buy livestock. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the money I received from GiveDirectly on purchasing two goats. This is an investment which helps during the emergency. I also bought clothes and beddings. The rest of the money I bought food for the family. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has changed our living standard.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was doing some casual work on the neighboring farm when I heard an SMS alert on my phone. I stopped farming and decided to check on it. I could not believe my eyes when I saw that I had received my first transfer of Kshs 55000/= from GiveDirectly. I felt very happy because I had never received such a large sum of money in my life. I knew that my dreams were now going to be fulfilled and I, therefore, started planning on what I was going to do with this fortune.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer from GiveDirectly is going to change my life for the better. I will be able to reunite with my wife and children who had gone away due to poverty-related problems. She was very happy to hear that I have built another house for them to live in. We will thus be able to have an iron-sheet roofed house just like the rest of my neighbors. The few herds of goats that I have, will help me in the future. When they grow and reproduce, I will be able to sell some of the offspring and get money to do other important things. I will hence not be forced to do casual work all the time to earn a living. The transfer has also enabled us to buy new clothes for ourselves and food for our consumption. We will no longer hence go hungry.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The transfer from GiveDirectly has helped me a lot. I used part of the money to build a new house that is roofed with iron-sheets for my family. I also bought a goat with part of the transfer and for the remaining amount, I used it in buying some clothes and food. I have been living in a grass-thatched house for quite some time and I have always wanted to build a new house that is roofed with iron sheets. The reason why I wanted to do so is that getting grass for roofing is a very big challenge and I also wanted my house to look like the rest of the neighbors. I was not in a position to do so before because the little money that I have been getting from the casual jobs that I usually do, usually goes to the purchase of food and hence not enough to buy materials such as iron sheets for constructing the new house. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for this program because it has enabled me to achieve my dreams.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am now living alone in this house not because I do not have a wife and children but poverty really hit hard on me and this tore my family apart. My wife and children left me to go back to my in-laws because I could not provide for them anymore. I could not afford to buy them any food and the house had a leaky roof. The children would get sick oftenly because of the condition in this house. My parents died while I was still young and we couldn't go to school anymore because we had to look for work to help us buy food. I have undergone a lot of pain and suffering in this life and at times I feel like I should not live anymore. I am now happy that Give Directly has come to my rescue and with these transfers I would like to build a decent house and ask my family to come back. I would also like to rent a garden where I can plant a few crops to feed my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is usually in the morning when I have woken up and feeling energetic because I usually do a lot of manual work which requires a lot of energy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I faced in my life was losing my parents at a young age which made me struggle as a child and miss education which would have helped me now when am grown.
