Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was three days later from the day the transfers were received when I realized that I had money in my account. I heard people talking about the GiveDirectly transfer and how they are planning to spend on when I thought it was not my lack that why I did not receive it. I decided to ask my daughter-in-law to check so that I could get the courage of calling the hotline number for confirmation only to realize that the money was sent and it was three days old in my account. The happy state I became after knowing that I was not left out made me dance and ululate in celebrating GiveDirectly.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The difference that has already shown itself if that there is progress toward the desire I had. The piping was done and what is remaining is the approval so that we get the water. This step could not have reached where it is now if it were not for the transfer. For a while I have been desiring but because I did not have money nothing was taking place.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My long-time desire was to get fresh water at my home and this could be achieved by fixing a water tap. Therefore I used KES 20000.00 to apply for the water from the Kilifi Water and Sewage Company (KIWASCO). As of now, I am still waiting for them to finalize the last stages so that I can get water at my home. I took this step because as a family we have been yearning for freshwater since we get it at a distance from where we reside. For the remaining amount, I opted to save it till I get the water then I will know the next move or what to do next.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
In my view and as per my age, I have been admiring to have my own water connection so that I can reduce the burden of getting water 5km away from here. In this regard, I intend to use half of my transfers to install tap water. This will help me even to earn something when I sell the water to my neighbors.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I do charcoal making sometimes as a way of making a living. Last month I made very unexpected sales which really boosted my financial state. With that money, I was able to buy my daughter-in-law some baby clothes because she gave birth last month.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
According to my age, it is supposed to be a situation where my daughter-in-laws bring water for me. But I can tell you sometimes I have to get two plastics of 20ltrs at least to help them. It is very far, a distance of 5km.
