How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to save enough money henceforth that will be used to pay school fees and meet other needs for my children who will be joining form one as from next year. I am already taking part in a merry go round contribution kitty that acts as a savings plan and once I receive the contributions, the money shall be used to pay school fees for my first child. I am a single mother and I rely mainly on casual work to make ends meet. Failing to plan therefore will mean that my children may not find it smooth with their secondary school education. It is fir this reason that I am putting all the efforts to make sure that she will join school without a hitch.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion GiveDirectly did very well by giving us support in form of cash. This support gave all of us an opportunity to spend the money in the ways we thought would be of great benefit to us. Having bought a dairy cow and a piece of land brought so much joy in my life that has left me very grateful. Seeing what other people did differently as well makes me appreciate the more what GiveDirectly did to us.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 25000 to purchase a piece of land and used another KES 28000 to build a new house in it. I am a single mother of three and I largely depend on casual work to support my family. The money that I get from the casual work is hardly enough to buy food and sustain other little needs of my family. I also live temporarily in a house that I was given by my parents and my children have never found a place they can call home. I thank God that GiveDirectly has earned me the respect that any responsible parent deserves by enabling me to fulfill the desires of my heart; buying a piece of land and putting up a house in it. This has made my family very happy and we will always be indebted to GiveDirectly for this. Going forward, my focus shall be towards making sure that we have enough money through a savings plan of merry go round contribution and use this money to pay school fees for my first born child who is joining her secondary school as from next month.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home relaxing after having had a busy when I received my transfer. I became so happy after reading the Mpesa message and immediately thanked God for the blessing that had just come in. With this message, I foresaw a total change in my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
My family has been feeding well for the past one month and my children always wear clean school uniforms when going to school. This has made them happy all the time since they're no longer secluded by their peers at school due to wearing home clothes. In addition, they drink enough milk daily unlike before when I used to buy milk and I am also able to earn an extra KES 40 daily by selling milk to my neighbor. All these have given me peace of mind and I am grateful to GiveDirectly for making it happen.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother and I usually depend on doing some casual work where I earn between KES 50- 200 a day depending on the work that I find. This was usually not enough to cater to our basic needs on time and this had made life unbearable. I am glad that GiveDirectly came at the time when I needed help the most. I spent KES 30000 to buy a dairy cow and two goats at KES 8000 after receiving my transfer so that my family will always have milk for consumption. In addition, this is an investment that will remind me of GiveDirectly for many years to come as I continue enjoying their proceeds. Also, I spent KES 4000 to pay school fees for my three children in primary school and to buy school uniforms for them since they had been wearing home clothes since the ones they had been wearing were torn. Using the remaining amount, I bought two sacks of maize for our consumption, clothes, and other household necessities.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a separated mother of three children and I rely on daily jobs that I do around my home to provide for them. The jobs are not easy to get and on a good day, I earn KES 300 which is not enough for my family. Receiving this money will be a big relief to me since it will enable me to purchase a dairy cow that will provide milk for my children and also for sale. Having a dairy cow that enables me to sell milk will improve my income and allow me to meet my family's needs and also save some of the money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the 6 last months, our area has received sufficient rainfall that has enabled us to do farming. As someone who depends on casual jobs, this has provided me with opportunities to weed other people's farms and in turn, earn something to sustain my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The major challenge that I am currently facing is financial constraints. The average amount of money that I earn daily (KES 300) is not sufficient to support my family and also pay school fees for my children in school hence the need to find another source of income that will meet all these needs.
