How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
With my first transfer, I was able to start vegetable farming which I have put so much of a work on. I am looking forward to get a good investment returns and invest more money on the farm. This accomplishment means that, I will no longer work as a casual again and I will be able to pay school fees for my children and cater for other bills.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly lifted me and changed my life in so many ways that I could have never expected someone to. This means that, so many people have experienced the same impact and generally, what GiveDirectly does well is uplifting the less fortunate in the society through the unconditional cash transfers. Honestly I have not seen an area that you need to improve on and I will urge you to continue doing the good work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been living in my one bedroom house which my sons who are in high school and it has never been easy for a few couple of years because we all needed our privacy. I couldn't help the situation out because my husband and I work as casuals in tea plantations and we could not afford to build them a separate house as we also needed to raise their school fees. Being enrolled in the program was a good opportunity to build them a house of their own and I spend $400 of my second transfer to build them a one bedroom house. I spend the balance to pay their school fees and I am happy that we were able to accomplish one of our major anticipated project.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I was at my home and it was around 8:00 pm when I received the message confirming that I had received the money in my account. I was actually cooking and my children were there with me at that time. I saw the message and the happiness was written all over my face that my children realized it. I shared the good news with them we were all happy about it. I couldn't imagine that finally I was going to be able to accomplish the things that I had thought I would not be able to accomplish over a long time. I took a minute to say a thank you prayer to God for the miracle of the moment. I later withdrew the money and put it into good use as I had planned with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am currently very happy person compared to before I received the payments. I could only dream of owning a dairy cow and each day I woke up worried of how I was going to accumulate enough money to pay school fees for my children. I thank God that GiveDirectly came through for us and I have not only been able to pay school fees but also buy a dairy cow for us as a family. These two have made me very happy and stress free. I ft relieved upon receiving and using the payments. I am sure no amount of words can express how much I am happy and grateful to GiveDirectly. May God bless you and expand your territories.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used KES 37000 to buy a heifer cow that is almost calving and used another KES 17000 to pay school fees for my child who is doing his form four this year. The remaining amount was used to till a piece of land that I own and to buy food for family. I still have two children in school-one in his secondary school and the last born who is in grade three. Payment of school fees has been one of the hardest tasks for me since I entirely depend on small scale business of selling firewood to raise money for all the needs of my family. I have other children that came before these two and I am happy that at least they have cleared their secondary education. I however had to sell all the livestock that I had to take them through their education. My desire has always been to see them do better than me so that they may have a brighter and better future for them and their children. It was therefore a blessing fir me to receive the lumpsum amount and be able to but at least one dairy cow. This investment shall go a long way in making my life much more easy and affordable considering that soon I will have only one child in school. I am just grateful to GiveDirectly for the support they gave.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means that I'll not struggle with paying school fees for my son this academic year. My husband is working as a casual labourer and we struggle to pay annual school fees of KES 40,000 in a year. My son also doesn't have his own house, and he usually borrows a sleeping and studying place in the neighborhood. I'm happy that I'll be able to build for him a house and clear his school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We were excited and happy when we got the news that Give Directly will be enrolling us as beneficiaries. It brought a lot of joy and happiness to us
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The main challenge is paying my son's anuual school fees given that his father does not have a stable job. He has been sleeping in the neighborhood because we are not able to build him a house.
