How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After receiving the first and the second transfer and spending them on all I had planned, I am happy that the construction is now complete. At the moment, I have a new goal to demolish an old kitchen I had been using and move it closer to the new house. Initially, I thought I could still use it, but realized recently that it is a bit far from the main house and needed to move it a little closer.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Sending us an unconditional cash transfer was the best idea initiated by GiveDirectly and was welcomed by everyone in our village. We had a chance to plan and decide on our spending without any influence from any staff after receiving it. On the other hand, it was my wish that all the villages that were skipped with a promise to be revisited later could also be supported. They had been waiting and are still hopeful to date that their time will finally come.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have a dairy cow that is currently lactating and has been providing my family of three with enough milk. On receiving the second transfer, I bought another heifer at KES 28000. Adding another cow to my field has been a good feeling for me, knowing that I will soon alternate their breeding periods, hence not going a season without milk in my family. In addition, I also spent KES 4800 on a sheet that I am currently rearing with the preexisting flock. I also spent KES 6000 on a piece of furniture for my new house, and the remaining amount on buying foodstuff and new pairs of clothes for my family of three. I am grateful for the support from GiveDirectly that has pushed me to work harder with the projects I am currently doing.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was in the kitchen preparing breakfast for the family when my neighbor came running and informed me to check my phone and read the new messages that I had received. I started having mixed feelings since I did not know what was going on but it was immediately replaced with joy after seeing and reading the Mpesa message. I quickly rushed back to our main house and informed my spouse who was still sleeping and he was equally overjoyed upon hearing the good news.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
With the transfer, we were able to acquire an additional asset for our family. This will lead to an increase in income from dairy farming. Since our family is still growing, we do not spend more than KES 300 in a day and due to this, I will be saving part of this income so that I can later invest it in other income-generating projects. As a family, we are grateful to GiveDirectly for enabling us to achieve such a milestone in our lives.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I depend on subsistence and dairy farming while my spouse has a motorcycle that he uses to offer taxi services in the neighborhood. Since we have only one child, we have been in a position to meet most of our basic needs on time since I usually earn KES 150 daily from the sale of milk after setting aside two liters for our consumption. With the transfer, I bought a dairy cow worth KES 29000 and used the remaining KES 25000 to purchase some utensils since the ones we had were few, clothes and food for the family. I am glad that we were able to do something tangible with the transfer that will enable us to enjoy GiveDirectly's good deeds for a long time.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My dream has been to start a boutique enterprise but lack of capital has been my biggest challenge. With this money, I see light at the end of the tunnel. I will plan KES 30000 to kick start this business. This will boost my family income and thus we will have a better life. Milk is in high demand in our region. This makes me have the feeling of producing milk for sale and tap more income for my family. I will therefore plan KES 40000 to buy a dairy cow. With the remaining money, I will buy food and clothes for my family member.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My husband bought a motorbike in August. This has been our source of income for the last six months. This makes me happy now that we do not struggle a lot to put food on the table.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My family does not have a stable source. My husband is the sole breadwinner for the family. He earns about KES 300 daily. This is not sufficient to budget for family needs.
