How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, I want to upgrade my mud-walled house to a semi-permanent level.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well to give transfers in form of cash. This has helped us to make spending decisions according to our own needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my second transfer, my priority was to expand tiny my two-roomed house. This is because I had desired to expand the house over the past five years. l, therefore, spent KES 22,000 on the purchase of construction of materials. Of this, KES 14,000 was spent on 22 Ironsheets, KES 6000 on 12 ceiling boards, and KES 2000 on nails. All these I have bought are in preparation for extending my house on both sides to accommodate visitors. Secondly, I spent the KES 10,000 on clearance of school fees arrears for my daughter in college. The rest I have saved towards payment of house construction labor costs and school fees come next academic year

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at night and I was not yet asleep since I don't usually go to sleep early. Suddenly, I heard my phone ringing notifying me of a new message. I wondered what it was all about and hence I decided to reach out to it to check the contents. I was surprised when I read the SMS which was saying that we had received the promised transfer of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy on seeing this that I wanted to inform my husband right away, but on seeing how fast asleep he was, I decided to inform him in the morning. He was so happy on learning the good news, that day was our happiest.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer brought a very big difference in our lives as a family. We were able to achieve our goal of constructing a sleeping house for our girls. We were also able to pay college fees for our last born son. Having done the above, we now have some peace of mind, free from thoughts of where to get money to do so. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for this.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the transfer money on constructing a sleeping house for my girls. I spent more than KES 20000 on doing so. This is what I had always wanted to achieve the most since I have two girls who are unmarried and have children at home. They do not have a house of their own to sleep in with their children. So I thought it is good to construct one for them. We didn't have the money to do the construction because most of the money that we make from our income-generating activities most of it usually goes to the payment of school fees for our children. Our last born who is in college and three of our grandchildren. My husband is a veterinarian while as for me I am a dairy farmer. We had thought of constructing a small house which is grass-thatched when we get some money but when Givedirectly came to our village, we saw it best to construct for them a nice house that is roofed with iron-sheets. I am so glad that we have been able to achieve this though it is not yet fully complete.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been thinking aloud about where to get money to renovate my house, I am just a subsistent farmer and depend on casual jobs to earn a living. My earnings are just a little about KES 500 daily. This is not sufficient for me to provide basic needs for the family and use them for renovations. I will use KES 40000 to do the renovation. This money rekindles my hope of owning a farm. I will set KES 50000 to jumpstart this business. I am also struggling to find food for my family due to financial challenges. This money will help me stock food and buy clothing for my household.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been enjoying good health for the last six months, this gave me humble time to work and provide for my family. This brought me joy and happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Casual jobs are paying little money in our area. This little money makes me strain financially and unable to provide food for my family. It forces us to rely on less preferred foods like tea with sweet potatoes or even skip meals.
