How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My ambition has always been to start a food-related business. The additional and sustainable income from this would greatly assist me in achieving my long-term goal of providing a better life for my children. I'd like to see them finish their education, get good jobs, and live a life that is better than what my husband and I were given by our parents.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
To criticize GiveDirectly, one must first understand what they do in a community when they engage with it. People in our community have built houses, educated their children, purchased property, and so on, all thanks to GiveDirectly! With that said, I believe GiveDirectly excels at identifying, quantifying, and assisting in the eradication of the numerous financial challenges that countless recipients face on a daily basis. They truly are a blessing, and I only hope that they will return to help us finish and expand on the projects that their transfers have enabled us to pursue.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The funds from GiveDirectly allowed me to build a 1-bedroom house with a verandah. My husband and I took the opportunity to also upgrade our bed to a bigger one. As a housewife with a one and a half-year-old,, living with my mother-in-law was a strain on our relationship, and with the $90 my husband makes from casual jobs on construction sites, it would have been impossible for us to manage to move out and build a house for ourselves within a similar period to that which GiveDirectly transfers allowed us to. The remainder of the funds went to ensuring that our house was running smoothly by buying food and the like to keep us going. GiveDirectly has been such a blessing to me and my household that we lack the words to express just how much.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
That morning, I woke up to my normal daily routine and as I usually switch off my phone before going to bed, I didn't switch upon waking up. While I was doing some few things outside, I overheard my neighbors talking about receiving their transfers. I hurriedly rushed to the house and switched on my phone and the first message that popped up was the transfers message. I was very excited about this as I called my husband and informed him about it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Previously, my husband and I used to share a very small sized bed and our daughter didn't have any. I was able to buy a bed specious enough for us and give the one that owned to our daughter. I'm happy that we nowadays sleep comfortably and enjoy our nights. We also live in a safe house and nolonger afraid under crumbling house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Before I was enrolled in the program, I had started building a two rooms house to replace the one which I was living in because was almost crumbling. Since I did not have money and I was depending on the little salary of KES 3000 that my husband was earning, the rate at which the building was moving up at was very low. When I received my first transfer, I decided to finish up building one room so that my family can move in and evade the danger. I spend KES 30000 of my recent transfer to build one room towards completion, KES 9000 to buy bed and mattress so that I can give the small sized bed that we owned to our child and I have been spending the balance to buy food and other basic necessities. Im looking forward to complete building the other room once I receive my next transfer and my family will have a decent and specious house to live in.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Since I am married it is expected to live in a separate house with my husband according to our culture but due to financial instability, I was forced to sleep in my mother-in-law's house for some months until I could not stay any longer when I got my firstborn daughter. We decided to put up a structure which is now halfway to its completion. I desire to have it completed so that I can have a place to stay in. I am planning to spend 30000 KES to buy iron sheets and a door, after which I will also spend 10000 KES to buy a bed and a mattress.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Getting my firstborn daughter was my biggest happiness. I was young so I had very little knowledge of what it takes to be a mother. I received my baby with no complications and here I am, a happy mother.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints have been the biggest challenge since my husband is a casual labourer with no sustainable source of income. The 200 KES he gets from taking care of a poultry farm is not enough. other uses like a shelter are affected to sustain. Food is much affected since we majorly depend on maize as a food crop but due to the harsh weather conditions, harvesting has only remained as a wish.
